I've only seen Pulp Fiction and the Terminator. I didn't even realize Pulp Fiction is in LA. I think it's easier to recognize when a movie's in NYC because there's always (1) an extended shot of the ESB and (2) a scene showing the subway. It's hard to confuse it with any other city.
Collateral with Tom Cruise comes to mind. Was the Usual Suspects set in LA?
Actually in a lot of the shows, they do a bit of shooting in NYC, then do the "set work" in LA. Since we are talking about it, Seinfeld is very much like this. The restaurant they eat at is actually in NYC and that is what they show, once you cut inside it's just a set.

Exactly. It's a set. So it's not LA, either. It's LA setting up to look like an NYC restaurant based on a picture of the real restaurant, what the inside either does or probably looks like. For all intents and purposes, it's looked at as NYC. And it should be.
Also, do you guys get this defensive when LA is pretending to be another city for filming, or just for New York City?
I hate to break this to you but--most people probably think New York is LESS a player in film than it actually is, much less on the level of Los Angeles.
Yes, it's the setting for a lot of films. So is the Old West, so is Outer Space.
Hollywood and the film industry however, are synonymous.

Look I get it, LA's a Titan when it comes to entertainment. I won't downplay that but you're dismissing NYC just because a movie has it as its backdrop but it wasn't shot there? Dude people see the big city and think NYC. That's the bottom line. NYC is a lifestyle city (so are LA, LV, and Miami) and people instantly recognize that whether it comes crystal clear or subtly.
Hm speed dating, jet skiing on the Hudson, NY's nightclub scene, artifact museum, bar scene, wealthy penthouse accommodations, clever moves to pick up NY women, news stands, private yachts, an NY corporate board meeting, NY sports games, NY 'final kiss before walking the date home' moment.

That movie was quintessentially NY.
Yeah...they take us everywhere from Hook & Ladder to MoMa to Battery Park to the Fulton Fish Market to the Children's Zoo to Rice to Riches in NoLita to sexy SoHo lounges. Sex and the City does that as well. I have never seen LA shown so intimately on the Big Screen or on TV. (500) Days of Summer was a good start, but that's the only movie that comes to mind.
Busy lately. As you know I spent 5 months in Seattle, got back to DC 6 weeks ago and just got married. Just got back into town 4 days ago unfortunately right before a storm and now I'm packing to move to Boston from DC.

Yet, it's still in LA. The power of the industry is just that....LA can become anywhere. Metaphorically reflective of the dynamic city that LA is. Parts of the valley have been used for decades to stand-in for the midwest. Seinfeld simply wouldn't have worked as an LA show, the LA culture simply isn't as "kosher" as NYC.
It would surprise many to know that Seinfeld is actually filmed in LA. Honestly, it might even make some hardcore fans cry.
About 3/4 of the NYC replies are downplaying LA's film industry and trying to call it irrelevant.
NYC is financially more important....culturally, LA is more significant. Not necessarily more important, that really cannot be quantified, although a lot more relevant things to the average American are out of LA...Dancing with the Stars for example.

NYC cannot admit that LA is culturally more significant....only because that is seen as "cooler" than being financially important.
It really is that simple. Main reason it produces knee-jerk reactions. People cannot rationalize it. It's no different than someone in the midwest getting mad when one of their own wants to move to LA...knowing they want to goto LA because there's beaches, palm trees, mountains, Hollywood, and this pre-packaged "cool" lifestyle that most in LA aren't even able to afford.
NYC since 9/11 has only been put on a pedestal by all the media (liberal, conservative, moderate - it doesn't matter). While, LA, gets blamed for everything...from excessive botox to the iphone obsessed culture, teenage girls wanting implants, and basically everything wrong with America.
The argument isn't being accurately represented here. No one said LA's film industry is irrelevant. What the argument has been centered on is that film and television are one of several cultural exports that the US makes (and we have many others), that the production of media about a subject in LA or in any city is not wholly the work of where the media is produced since the subject matter is drawing from elsewhere, and that LA no longer has a monopoly on the film industry. Also, you realize that the current spate of these contest shows comes from a trend started in London, right?
This is not the same as saying LA's film industry is irrelevant or just sour grapes.

ANYWHERE can become ANYWHERE when you build a set. Hell, they used to film Law and Order: SVU's inside shots in New Jersey until a few years ago when their contract with that studio ended. But did it look like a NYC precinct high up in a building, or a courtroom, or in some cases an NYC apartment instead of a NJ one? Of course it did. That's the power of creating sets. With attention to detail, a set anywhere can look like a place anywhere else. That "power" isn't special to LA. It just is for some shows and movies. Others, the power is given to NYC or NJ or wherever else a set is created to represent another area.
