Two states come to mind immediately. Arkansas and South Carolina. Charleston is at 664,000 and Little Rock is at 886,000.
Well Columbia is the largest MSA in South Carolina with 777,000 people, but the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson CSA has 1.28 million people.

Check out the population growth for places like Alaska, Wyoming, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, hell even look at South Carolina and Louisiana...very slow growth.
Mississippi has morbid obesity, high percentage of h.s. drop outs, teenage pregnancy, engrained segregation, and is an economic albatross on the back of America. Throw on religious fanaticism on top of that. It also has a deadly high murder rate. It's the American third world. A veteran friend of mine from there jokingly refers to it as Kandahar province with less culture.
Birmingham is at least trying to change its image a bit with mixed results. I'd take attempts at real progress in Birmingham rather than wallowing in poverty and rage like MS. Plus Alabama has a pretty cool football tradition if you're into that.
I forgot to mention every few years another "incident" crops up coming from Mississippi where they protest against having integrated prom nights and want to keep their segregated school events.
The year is two thousand and twelve and this is still a thing in Mississippi.

Mississippi has a higher population than Arkansas. Check out the population growth for places like Alaska, Wyoming, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, hell even look at South Carolina and Louisiana...very slow growth. But I'm not sure why population growth is relevant, to this.
Let's just act like I never said anything to offend you to begin with.
There is so much that I could use to continue my claims just using what you yourself wrote above.
Sometimes I get a bit carried away. I'll just keep my fingers off my keyboard in this thread and read what everyone else has to say.
We're all Southern at the end of the day. For that, I'll leave you be.
And just to leave on a positive note, I think the kids at Ole Miss have started taking steps in the right direction towards the future. Hopefully they can graduate and take that knowledge back to their less than bright relatives on how the werld weally werks. People of all shades, and backgrounds mingle together, they live in the same neighborhoods, and they even attend the same churches.
Oh my GAWD, there are churches with whites, blacks, latinos, and asians all the same congregation?
I can just about imagine the look on Billy Ray and his Klan brothers faces when William comes after his first year in college and says, Ole Miss ain't down with the KKK anymore
Are people forgetting this is a comparison between Mississippi and Alabama. Mississippi might rank 50th in a certian negative category but Alabama is usually right there too. Plus any stereotype you want to attach to Mississippi can just as easily be said about Alabama. So maybe some people could take all their talking down a notch.
Which of the two have better coasts and coastal cities?
Alabama has the better coast. Gulf Shores/Orange Beach are big tourist destinations and the some of the beaches are about as nice as the Florida beaches. Plus Mobile is near the coast. Fairhope is nice too.
Mississippi's coast has the popular casinos but the beaches are not definitely not as nice. Plus there is no city that can compete with Mobile. The coast has a lot of nice old homes and big oak trees along the shore but some of them were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. There are some nice coastal towns too.
