Metro New Orleans IS smaller than Metro Birmingham Alabama (at least for now) ...google it folks
New Orleans IS NOT smaller than Birmingham. Below I have a link from Wikipedia of 2012 FEDERAL CENSUS ESTIMATES at it has New Orleans as the 45th largest metro and Birmingham as the 48th largest metro. I know that's not a big difference but please be mindful that the New Orleans metro lost 100,000 due to Hurricane Katrina. If not for Katrina it would'nt be this close. By the way New Orleans is the fastest growing city in the U.S. expect for that gap to get wider. By the way I love Birmngham, a lot of history there also.
One way to look at it...people want to say they've been to Las Vegas (even in the US). While not being a world-class city, it's one of those places everyone has heard of and would like to see.
Aww ok sorry last time I looked at New Orleans metro data in detail was a little bit after Katrina...New Orleans was smaller than B Ham than...but it has since caught back up and surpass Birmingham again SOOOOOOORY Folks..New Orleans is bigger SOOOORY
But to put things back in perspective...New Orleans is still smaller than Memphis, any way you wanna split it
(the point of that being such a small city packing so much power and pulling things that Atlanta or Dallas could pull despite being 1/5th there size,...could you imagine Louisville or Cincinnatti pulling the Superbowl,...being the setting of movies,..or having a NFL AND NBA team)
Just got back from Las Vegas two days ago. Besides the strip and a small cluster of casinos on the north side of the city, it looks like any other sprawled western city. It takes more than some fancy hotels to elevate a city to world class status.

What does Memphis have to do with anything? New Orleans will outgrow that metro as well.
Cincy has NFL and MLB, MLB is much more prestigious than NBA.

I definitely get your point and I agree that NOLA packs a punch for its size.
Native to New Orleans but I'm surprised that the Big Easy has as big a reputation as it does hearing some of the posters. I've never considered New Orleans close to being world class but it's interesting, fun, and delicious...with a side serving of humidity.
Vegas is pretty well known throughout the world so it's probably closer than New Orleans to being "World Class" but I still think it falls way short.
I will say that I've worked internationally for many years and Vegas & New Orleans are the cities that most people rave about.
