Chicago vs Green Bay. Sounds odd not to have a rivalry with Milwaukee (its minor), but the hatred between northern WI and northern IL runs deep, and its been that way for a long time. It basically all stems from the Bears/Packers rivalry, but extends beyond, too. Chicagoans vacation up there in the summer, and they cant stand us. The feeling is mutual, of course.
Chicago vs Detroit. This is also because of sport rivalries, and it gets brutal at times.
Phoenix vs Tucson. Tucson views Phoenix as a white collar monstrosity, we view Tucson as a blue collar red headed stepchild. The ASU vs U of A rivalry is also one of the longest rivalries in the nation, but can be downright nasty, too.
On point. And your normal folk don't know much about these.
I'd say the Chicago Detroit one isn't that big of a deal though. But the other two are huge.
This is a good post, however, Boston would be the older brother.
Yeah I knew when I made the post that Boston was the older city but I think that when the country started Philly was more nationally and internationally prominent and continued that way for close to two centuries though Boston definitely held its own as well. In the last 40-50 years, though, I think Philly's been gradually surpassed in many areas by Boston.
Minneapolis Chicago isn't a thing, at all. Folks in Chicago for the most part don't know/care about any other cities in the Midwest. As much of an inferiority complex Chi has as the '2nd city' to NYC, it has that much of a superiority complex over MPLS, StL, MWKE etc etc in the Midwest. That's because Chi is a legit world-class city and the other Midwest cities just aren't.
In MPLS people like to visit the city of Chicago for vacation but most here don't really think of Chicago as special outside of touristy things. Here they know about the murders, traffic, dysfunctional govt and higher taxes. TCs residents are very proud of their area. So are Chicagoans.
Never found a real sense of rivalry between the two cities when I lived in DFW. It always seemed like Dallas wasn't really concerned with Ft. Worth, and Ft. Worth didn't really hate Dallas, just the fact that outsiders didn't recognize them as anything more than a large suburb of Dallas.
"One of the best-known stories about [Amon G.] Carter is that he would take a sack lunch whenever he traveled to Dallas so he wouldn't have to spend any money there."
