Me and you could go back and forth all day and I have things to do. You look at a sliver of a states culture and want to think it defines it, and it doesn't. African Americans are what, 20% of south floridas population? And with a huge Carribean component that isn't southern. If you want to tell me I know nothing of floridas black culture I could say the same to you about floridas white culture, and the white culture is even further removed from southern than the black culture is.
I'm not arguing Florida's white culture as I didn't bring that up. I brought up the culture I'm most familiar with and the majority of Florida's' Black culture is Southern. Period. And this includes South Florida.
What percent of south Texas is non-Hispanic white and black? South Florida as a whole (take all the counties of southeast and southwest Florida) is only about maybe 40% Hispanic, with Miami being much higher than places like Lee county (though Lee has a lot as well). I'm guess south Texas is more than this?
Well, there are counties in South Texas that are well above 80% Hispanic and Latino; some near 100% Hispanic. Many South Texas cities are part of international metros, with component cities across the border in Mexico (see Laredo and Brownsville). It's up to you, then, to decide upon whether or not the South Texas culture, or the Floridian culture, is less southern.
Carribean blacks and southern blacks don't like each other. Southern blacks are often jealous of carribeans second generation success while their economic standing stagnates. Often southern blacks will call Carribean blacks derogatory names for coming from poorer countries, etc.
Don't play ignorance. You know this, all black people know this. Even a lot of young white people who grew up with the two groups know this.
That little Haitian vs. African American, back and forth thing was in the past, and is no longer an issue anymore, stop it. Black is Black, no matter the nationality, there's no division between us, and will never again be one.
Is South Florida Southern? no, especially if you include the whole region. But is South Florida oblivious to Urban Southern culture? no; that includes Cubans, Haitians, Jamaicans, African Americans, etc.
I think the issue here is that south Texas doesn't revolve around a major city like south Florida does, so people aren't as familiar with it. I doubt most here have been to Corpus Christi, McAllen, Laredo, etc., nor would there be any reason to outside of work or visiting friends or family.
It's quite apparent that many people on this forum are not well traveled. South Texas should have gotten a unanimous vote for least southern.
I have lived in Houston and am now in Miami. While neither area is particularly "Southern", South Texas is way more "murican" which is a heck of a lot closer to Southern than the South American, Caribbean and Northern cultures that dominate South Florida.

South Texas is pretty much everything south of Houston. Like Corpus, Brownsville, Laredo, Del Rio, McAllen areas. BTW, I mistakingly voted for South Florida as well. I think you could say that the biggest city in South Texas is San Antonio but it's still very different from the Rio Grande Valley.
