DC and Philly are both influential Mid Atlantic/Northeast corridor cities. Tho, Philly has a more industrial past and its ethnic demographics are more akin to NYC & Boston than DC. Philly is also more gritty compared to pretentious DC.

DC and Atlanta are both booming "new South" cities (Atl in the deep south and DC on the northeast/south border). Both cities are known to be financial & cultural powerhouses for Black Americans.

Im sure theres more similarities and differences DC has with both cities, but these are some of the main ones I can think of. So do you think Washington DC is more similar to Philadelphia or Atlanta? and why

First, DC is not a "new south" city, even if it is growing like one.

That said, Philly, if we're talking about city limits here. The urban environment and the architecture are more similar, both with subway/rail systems (yes, I know about MARTA, but it doesn't compare to the DC Metro or SEPTA), and dense/walkable neighborhoods and urban cores. It's also hard to walk around either city without running into some historic site. Finally, though the National Mall is unique among US cities, the Art Museum to City Hall boulevard is a little DC-like.

If we're talking suburbs, then it's probably a closer call, with the outer/VA suburbs being much more like Atlanta. But as far as the cities themselves, DC and Philly are old, historic, urban cities, whereas Atlanta is clearly new south.

Definitely ATL. Similar demographics in city-proper. Large diverse, affluent African American populations. If you're considering the suburbs, DC and ATL feel very similar. Much different than the older, quaint Philly suburbs.

DC is most like a more urban ATL, given that they're both fast growing flourishing southern cities. Also, the prettiest black women in the country reside in both metros.

I've heard the comparisons of DC and Atlanta before but I just don't see it, besides the suburbs and the black population.. DC is on another level of urban compaired to Atlanta.. Philly is a Northeastern city that's in it's own league.. DC is more Northeastern to me than southern, but if u ask my opinion, this just isn't a good more like comparison.

Nearly 40% of residents in the city of Atlanta live in detached single family homes. It is less than 10% in both D.C. and Philly. Also there is quite a bit of cross pollination between Philly and D.C. in terms of local chain restaurants like &pizza, good stuff eatery, honeygrow, etc.

Perhaps I should clarify. The metro area as a whole is much more like Atlanta. The city is a bit more like Philly though. As the above poster mentioned Atlanta isn't nearly as dense as Philly or D.C

Agree. Besides the Black population and some of the newer suburbs, I don't see much similarity between Atlanta and DC. When looking at how the cities function i.e. walk score, density, public transportation etc.. DC leans closer to Philly although they are still very different.
