In fact, the only areas of the city that I didn't spend any time in were Northwest and Southwest Philadelphia.

There's definitely still a lot of dirty areas in Philly though, with trash everywhere. if you go off of the main arterial streets you'll see. or maybe you just caught it on a good day

I'd say Chicago for sure. They are definitely having their problems with crime. But like most any other city, the crime is pretty much isolated in certain pockets around town and the vast majority of the city is pretty safe. Been there many times and have never felt unsafe whatsoever. You just have to use common sense. I actually prefer Chicago over such cities as NYC, SF, and LA by a pretty wide margin. Other cities get bum wraps, but I think Chicago gets it the worse.

I would agree with this. The crime problem is generally in certain south and west side neighborhoods away from the city's main commerce. That said, it continues to be a strong negative for the city. Imagine Chicago without this problem. They would soar.
