A "region" seems so ethereal. It may mean different things to different people.
I don't think DC or the DC/Baltimore "region" will feel as big as Chicago to me in my lifetime
7,196.1 square miles Chicago-Naperville, IL-IN-WI CSA,
12,630.2 square miles Washington-Baltimore-Arlington, DC-MD-VA-WV-PA CSA
8,722.6 square miles State of Maryland
12,405.9 square miles State of Maryland
Even if DC/Baltimore CSA is slightly larger, that is quite a lot more area in the CSA designation
The DC and Baltimore adjacent MSA's were 500k less than Chicago in 2017, with 8,161 sq mi combined, which makes DC-Baltimore more dense on paper as a region than Chicago's. So it is a myth that the CSA has to stretch until oblivion to match the population of Chicago, the two regions are on par with each other.

The Chicago MSA and CSA are nearly the same. Totally, different for DC. I mean honestly, into PA too according to some. Even Mighty NYC lost the Allentown/Bethlehem from its CSA this year. I guess DCs just expands more then NYC's
It's more Mighty DC now ..... guess that just cracks me up.
