That was my logic (just like the football Giants play in NJ but remain associated with NY), though I also overlooked the separate breakout of Ft Worth in the poll.

The Metroplex cities, Dallas and Fort Worth come to mind. Fort Worth with Sundance Square and the Stockyards are quintessentially Texan in an old school sorta way. Dallas is symbolic of modern Texas prosperity and growth.
Houston has a bayou and deep South overlap. San Antonio is very Texan but also has echos of old Mexico. El Paso is textbook for border town.
Dallas gets most of the attention, so I voted Dallas. Austin gets a lot of attention, too, but people understand it to be weird and unique in Texas.
However, El Paso's climate and desert scenery most evokes the imagery of Texas many people outside Texas, especially in California, have. They have this myth that most Texans live in the desert, just like how most Arizonans live in the desert, when in reality Houston, for example, has the climate and scenery of Northern Florida.
I may come under fire for this, but I have a theory.
I do think Houston might be the first city thought of in Texas among a majority of African Americans but that Dallas would be for virtually anyone else. I dont have any hard proof but as I read through everything in this thread and past threads and keeping in mind Houston's rich hip hop and rap culture, its an educated guess.
