I think that Nashville is best to not put its cart before its horse. Austin's horse is running faster.

Overall it depends on what you look for. I think on an excel spreadsheet, Austin wins. In the real world, the energy and lit factor of Nashville is tough to beat for any city that isn't a world renounced tourist destination.

But it's not. The opposite is actually true.

The state is keeping the city back like for example that transit plan state was getting people to go against it

This decade? Highly unlikely. Both cities have momentum. Austin's is a lot higher right now.

It would take a big, big shift. Seismic. I can't think of anything right now that wouldn't affect *both* cities, to be honest.

Beyond 2030? You have to give an immediate edge to Austin (due to the advantage in momentum), but it's really hard to predict the long term future.

Could Nashville pass Austin again? Absolutely. But I wouldn't bet on it in the next 10 years.

Short answer: No

Long answer: Because Austin is already larger (2.227M vs 1.959M), and it's growing faster (29.75% vs 17.5%), it will not be overtaken by Nashville.

You think the stuff on Austin's Excel spreadsheet doesn't reflect what's happening in the real world?

Can someone from Nashville point out where Nashville is leading Austin?

Economic growth?
Population growth?
Wages?
Education?
Development?
Someone posted Austin has more hotels.

As far as I know, Austin leads in every measurable category.

I don’t think many people care about country music in Nashville? Obviously a segment of the population does but. Jobs are far more important than boot scoot & boogies.

Good points! I think Austin leads in every category.

The big area Austin is way behind Nashville in, is professional sports.

Austin does not have the NHL or the NFL like Nashville. Austin is getting MLS, but Nashville has MLS already, as well.

I see Nashville as having a much more distinct "tourism destination" vibe, and it is just now starting to really boom to attract big brand companies, like Oracle, Amazon, Alliance Bernstein, etc.

Austin has been growing fast in the tech sector for about a decade+, so Nashville is behind there.

I think both cities have incredibly bright futures.

Austin has to be careful not to become a pricey, gridlocked Silicon Valley, California. While Nashville has to be careful not to become another sprawly, traffic-nightmare like Atlanta.
