The Northeast has historically been the industrial and economic center of the USA for nearly 200 years with legacy cities and assets located in places like NYC, Philadelphia and Boston and even as of late I would consider DC more Northeast than Southeast....

With that... the Southeast has seen a huge amount of growth over the past 25 years due in large part to its low COL for many and a more favorable climate.... And its economic might has become noticeable in places like NC, GA, FL and VA but NOVA is a toss up between Northeast and Southeast in my opinion.....

With that. What region in the US wins out based on:

COL:
QOL:
Culture:
Economy:
Character and Charm:
Transit:
Transportation (roads, etc):
Cities:
Suburbs:
Downtowns:
Higher Education:
Schools (K - 12):
Climate:
History:
Favorite thing about the Southeast:
Favorite thing about the Northeast:
Least favorite thing about the Southeast:
Least favorite thing about the Northeast:

Winner:

I did not include Maryland or Delaware in this poll...because they are honestly such a slice of both having Northeast and Southeast Qualities... where Richmond imo is solid Southeast in culture and history..

Favorite thing about the Southeast: weather, beaches, great smoky mountains, lower cost of living
Favorite thing about the Northeast: culture, transportation, better cities, better infrastructure, better jobs
Least favorite thing about the Southeast: lack of culture, too many religious ppl and lack of infrastructure in some areas
Least favorite thing about the Northeast: the weather, and cost of living

Winner: Northeast, easily for me, based on the criteria

*PS, you forgot Tennessee in the Southeast poll, as well as Kentucky and Mississippi

COL: Southeast
QOL: Tie (really depends on where and how much things are and what things you enjoy- i.e. if you enjoy big cities there's nothing like NYC in the South, but you can find great scenery and at decent costs in Upstate NY or in Wilmington NC- personally, I prefer the South but can easily see an argument for the NE).
Culture: Southeast
Economy: Tie. Again, another that depends on where you are and in what industry.
Character and Charm: Tie. I prefer small towns in the Southeast but New England has some remarkably neat towns.
Transit: Northeast, easy. NOLA is the only place in the South that even has a decent public transport system.
Transportation (roads, etc): Eh, depends on if you are in a newer fancy city like Charlotte or if you're in NOLA (roads are horrid). I feel like the Northeast has better ones in general but Philly, Boston, and NYC didn't have great roads either.
Cities: Southeast. I prefer NOLA, Memphis, Charleston, Savannah, Nashville to places like Philly or Pitt. However, I think there are really cool places all over and I love Boston.
Suburbs: No clue. I'm bias towards the South but I'd bet the Northeast has some amazing burbs especially since a lot of the cities are much older.
Downtowns: Northeast. I think only NOLA or Memphis are really neat in that category off the top of my head.
Higher Education: Northeast. The South has the "Magnolia League" with places like Duke, Vandy, Tulane, Wake, W&M, W&L and a lot more. They also have great public schools like UVA, UNC and UGA- but I think it's pretty tough to beat MIT, all the Ivies, places like Tufts or NYU etc.
Schools (K - 12):Northeast.
Climate: Southeast.
History: Both have really neat histories with founders in VA and MA; native american history and just really all are filled with great historical sites.
Favorite thing about the Southeast: Food
Favorite thing about the Northeast: Buildings
Least favorite thing about the Southeast: Food
Least favorite thing about the Northeast: Buildings

COL: Southeast
QOL: Southeast
Culture: Tie
Economy: Southeast
Character and Charm: tie
Transit: Northeast
Transportation (roads, etc): Southeast
Cities: Southeast
Suburbs: Southeast
Downtowns: Northeast
Higher Education: Northeast
Schools (K - 12): IDK
Climate: Southeast
History: Northeast
Favorite thing about the Southeast: The diversity of the cities, Climate, more elbow room, Lower Cost of living, Cleaner and newer
Favorite thing about the Northeast: Architecture
Least favorite thing about the Southeast: Major cities are very far apart compared to the northeast.
Least favorite thing about the Northeast: Everything is old, The northeast overrates itself in many aspects, too cold and snowy, too crowded, too expensive

Winner: The Southeast
The region is growing, has a diverse array of cities (DC, Miami, Charleston, Baltimore, Atlanta, Savannah..etc) with very different cultures, better weather, Cleaner, more modern, less depressed, faster growing, better QOL.

Not sure I want to touch this as a non-east coast person, but here goes:

COL: Southeast
QOL: Northeast
Culture: Northeast
Economy: Southeast
Character and Charm: Northeast
Transit: Northeast
Transportation (roads, etc): Tie, neither are great.
Cities: Northeast
Suburbs: Northeast
Downtowns: Northeast
Higher Education: Northeast
Schools (K - 12): Northeast
Climate: Northeast.
History: Northeast
Favorite thing about the Southeast: It's cheap.
Favorite thing about the Northeast: Mostly I just like northern New England, but the history overall is good.
Least favorite thing about the Southeast: laundry list I won't get into very much... historical preservation is lacking, old is considered bad all too often. The newer stuff there is underwhelming.
Least favorite thing about the Northeast: too expensive, too liberal.

Winner:
Northeast with an emphasis on Maine and New Hampshire. Upstate New York and rural Pennsylvania are okay too.

COL: SE
QOL: SE mostly due to COL. If you’re wealthy, NE.
Culture: NE
Economy: SE as a whole, but most of the top jobs are in the NE.
Character and Charm: SE. New England is great, but Savannah and Charleston are tough to beat here.
Transit: NE, not even close.
Transportation (roads, etc): Tie
Cities: NE
Suburbs: NE
Downtowns: NE
Higher Education: NE, not close either.
Schools (K - 12): NE, honorable mention to VA though.
Climate: SE
History: NE. Florida doesn’t even really have much history prior to the 1960s.
Favorite thing about the Southeast: Florida. It’s a nice tax haven with great beaches and is still relatively affordable.
Favorite thing about the Northeast: Greater Boston. Boston itself is great, but I really like it’s suburbs like Brookline, Cambridge, etc.
Least favorite thing about the Southeast: Lack of economic opportunity for the vast majority of it.
Least favorite thing about the Northeast: Taxes, COL in general.

Winner: SE, specifically because of FL. Otherwise, NE.

So much more diversity in culture, geography and people in the Southeast. It's also on the rise... and collectively the states listed in the poll have more people.

SE has the NE beat on cost of living, mountains, quality of life, leisure/lifestyle, natural beauty, lakes, cleanliness/environment and climate (except see snow skiing).
NE has edge in schools (but some of them are now indoctrination camps), snow skiiing, roads/mass transit.
