Everybody's also conveniently forgetting that Pennsylvania was one of the four dominant colonies, and had a direct influence on the culture of a large swath of the country. Central Pennsylvania doesn't have similarities to Kentucky; Kentucky has similarities to central Pennsylvania. Likewise, as Virginia culture spread north into Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula, and south into coastal North Carolina, Pennsylvania culture trickled down the Shenandoah Valley. In fact, Kentucky and the Shenandoah Valley are both hybrids of Pennsylvania, Virginia and frontier culture.

VA is more like NC than VA, by a good margin.

Easily NC. VA and PA have little to nothing in common.

Historical significance is something VA and PA have in common, and not to a small degree either. The colonial and Civil War eras are especially notable.

VA has the Chesapeake Bay while PA has the Delaware Bay. The Potomac and Delaware rivers serve as similar types of boundaries for both states as well.

Both states contain large swaths of top 10 metropolitan areas.

Rowhouse architecture is prevalent in both states.

Those are just some similarities off the top of my head. Just because VA and NC are more similar, that doesn't mean VA shares zero similarities with PA. Only one state sits between the two and it's not even very large.

People here are trying too hard to equate Virginia with NC. If Virginia and West Virginia hadn't separated, Virginia and Pennsylvania would be nearly identical. And even without WV, Virginia has more economic/social/transit ties to Pennsylvania.

There's a huge mental gap between Richmond and Raleigh. My mom even calls the 3 hour drive south of Richmond as entering the 'hinterlands' (especially since south of Richmond is nothing but impoverished towns full of speed traps).

Philadelphia meanwhile is right there. I'm even considering buying last minute Amtrak tickets to Philadelphia to take advantage of the great weather this weekend. Could never do that with North Carolina. And never do. Whereas with Pennsylvania, I've been to Gettysburg, Philadelphia, Lancaster, Hershey, Harrisburg and (less often) Pittsburgh many times.
