Everytime I see these stats, I always come away with how underrepresented Hispanics are in American media/advertising/culture.
Who would think that San Francisco has only 200,000 fewer Latinos than Asians? Or that Chicago has 700,000 more Latinos than Blacks? Or that New York almost has as many Latinos as it has Asians and Blacks combined?
And yet most commercials I see on TV are 50% Black, 30% White, 10% Asian, and 10% Mixed, Latino, and Other.
Very interesting data, and I assume a lot of this is because (a) Hispanics consume Spanish-language media that's 100% Hispanic, (b) Hispanics have their self-sustained neighborhoods, and (c) Hispanic culture doesn't really care about descriptive representation or diversity politics, but it does show just how skewed the data is from societal visibility.
Heck, I live in Washington, D.C. and I would have guessed 9% of the MSA is Latino. 17% is a lot!

Well, one issue is that Hispanic is a culture and linguistic distinction, and Hispanics come in a variety of skin tones and ethnic backgrounds. Then, many Hispanics are native to this country so even the cultural and linguistic differences are muted, at least when code switching.

Great. Thanks for this.
When you have time can we get the African continent please?
I wouldn't be surprised if a decent amount of those UK are Black or of West Indian descent.
Boston isn't super popular for Jamaicans overall so I'm not surprised. Boston's Caribbean population is dominated by DR and Haiti and the smaller English speaking islands.
I would be surprised. I knew one Jamaican kid from the Uk growing up I don't find them in Boston at all. Boston isn't super popular for Jamaicans (probably 7th/8th destination) but they are the 2nd biggest West Indian group and 14,000 is 2/3rds of Philly's 21,000. More of them than Irish immigrants. but there are only about 35,000 Jamaicans in MA statewide compared to 84,000 Haitians. It just seems like a lot to me because of their relatively large share of the black community even when compared to Philly.
I wonder if there are more Puerto Ricans in the Boston MSA than Dominicans still. I know it is not the case in the city. Statewide there are certainly far more Puerto Ricans.
I think part of this has to due with Hispanics can be of any race or combination of races and that some public figures currently or in the past of Hispanic heritage had not been outspoken about that aspect of their identity. Some people you may thought to be just white, black, Asian, are in fact Hispanic, or at least partially so. For example, I just learned literally minutes ago that Sammy Davis Jr had a Cuban mother. Bruno Mars, one of the biggest pop stars in the past decade, is multi-ethnic/racial including being part Puerto Rican with a very typical Spanish surname.
