People come to this forum to get accurate information. I've lived in the San Jose area my whole life and you honestly have no clue what you're talking about. There are bad parts of SJ, but even the worst parts are very tame compared to just about any other large city. They also only represent a small part of the city. I used to attend school in one of the worst parts of the East Side and am well aware of what the crappy parts of the city are like.
I only DROVE AROUND in San Jose for about 4 hours, before continuing on to the beach (@ Santa Cruz)
and from what I observed... Downtown was very Clean and looked "new" and fancy but VERY SHORT.
I don't think they had anything past 20 stories. It looked like. Maybe 25?
And the area was either very middle to upper middle class, and Rich...
Or dirty and ghetto. Potholes and DIRT on the main boulevards. Yes DIRT. The asphalt looked like crap.
No CURBS in alot of the Old-looking areas. You just kinda drive right onto the yard. HAHHAHHAHAHA !
It really didn't LOOK like Tijuana. It was just OLD, GHETTO, DIRTY, UGLY, and made me feel like I might get car-jacked by any one of the Old HOOPTIES and lowriders that were cruising around.. on a frickin WEDNESDAY !!! LOL !
Phoenix All the WAY .! I have not looked up the stats on their architecture, but from what I could SEE,
their buildings looked TWICE the height. And nice architecture.
People were "hip" and had a California swagger to them. But with a touch of "Texan".
Anyone from Texas will not understand what that means. You have to be from out-of-town to know what that means...

This is just a small taste of the ugly areas of San Jose.
I'm gonna dig deeper to find the area that I was describing as "dirty" and pot holes, and "no curbs".
I don't remember where exactly where it is/was, coz we didn't know the area, and we just drove up and
down streets, through as many areas and neighborhoods as we could.
That's what me n my girl do when we go to a new city or town.
And I remember leaving San Jose thinking that it was very HOOD.
It's very NICE in areas, and very UGLY . Hardly any in-between.

Oh yeah, you DO realize that no matter HOW GOOD places look in 'pictures', to get a REAL feel of
how dirty a place is, you just have to BE THERE and Walk the streets. Pictures don't do them justice
one way or the other, many times.
This is just a small taste of the ugly areas of San Jose. Yup, sure looks like a complete dump to me!

The best vantage point of the Phoenix skyline is heading west on the loop 202 freeway from Tempe/ASU you can see the whole linear spread of both downtown and midtown which is something of a 4 mile stretch along Central Ave. There are some vacant lots along Central Ave that seem to be infilling with midrise residential development now that they have the light rail line in place. I wonder if at some point they may erect taller buildings in Midtown at the northern end of Central Ave as its not so much in the flight path up around there. It could become somewhat like Peachtree St. in Atlanta in the way that is developing around their midtown area.

First off, your street view links all lead to the same street. That also has to be in one of the very worst East Side neighborhoods that is notorious for gang activity. I already said that I'm well aware of San Jose's crappy neighborhoods. In fact the neighborhood you picked is literally five minutes from where I attended elementary and high school. It was bad then too. That area still represents a very small portion of the city. San Jose is about 174 square miles, most of which looks nothing like the neighborhood you picked.
You may have spent four hours driving around town, but if you only stayed in one area...which just so happened to be a bad part of town, obviously you'd think the city is a s***hole. So you drove around a bad part of town for four hours, big deal. I've driven every square mile of this whole valley for over thirty years. I think I'm a bit more qualified to assert my opinion. Based on your original post, I can pretty much guarantee you never went anywhere near any of the areas I posted street view images of.
Nobody's trying to make you out to be wrong. You ARE wrong, plain and simple. I always call people out on this board when they post misinformation. Hmmmm, let's see who's post is more credible...somebody who drove around a crappy part of town for a few hours or somebody who's been driving all over the crappy parts and good parts of town for over thirty years.

Heh heh heh heh.... dangit. I have to Go through and fix those links. Sorry. Don't know what happened.
And I had some good squaller for you.
The reason I posted (the 1 link) anyway, is because all you did was try to discredit me by posting the NICE areas, and Upper Middle Class areas.
I DID drive through the VERY NICE areas. But like I said (or tried to say, in so many words)
San Jose seemed to me to be half-and-half.
Either it was VERY pretty,
or VERY ugly. And dirty.
But this is a Skyline thread, and like I said.. San Jose has nice looking downtown buildings, and a square (Ceasar Chavez) , but I doubt anything was taller than 25 stories. (I'm going to check on that) .
Looking at it in pictures, you'd think they had some mid-rise Highrises.
Phoenix looks very similay... but if you GO to Phoenix, you will immediately realize that their downtown
is TWICE the height. (Even though they are STILL half the size of a Houston, Dallas, or Atlanta)
So I pick Phoenix.
Do you want me to replace those links with the ones I TRIED to post, but messed up on?
or should I leave the dirty ghettos out of it?
I honestly don't want to go back and fix it. LOL. Waste of time....

I don't think you even explored much of San Jose since much it is pretty average looking--it's not a particularly grimy or run down city at all... Someone from a city in the Midwest or Northeast would laugh that San Jose is a dirty city.
It's basically a collection of different middle-class suburban buildings styles for what it's worth, but most of it is pretty clean and mellow. Even compared to further north in the Bay Area, it looks pretty tidy.
As far as downtown goes, this has been pointed out ad naseum on here, but there's height restrictions that prevent higher building due to how close the airport is. Oh well... It's not the greatest downtown, but neither is Phoenix, so...

Those are some nice areas.
Anyway... I am not wanting to argue or attempt to put San Jose 'down'.
sheesh, I live in Old East Dallas. !
There are tennie-shoes hanging off of the telephone/electricity wires in my area. Check out the corners of San Joaquin & N. Carroll ave, Dallas, Tx. And keep your eyes on the wires. https://maps.google.com/maps?rlz=1C1...ed=0CCQQ8gEwAA LOL ! (across from the church. Then when you see those shoes... follow the wire to the RIGHT, and you'll see a few more pairs) HHAHAHHAHAA !
oh!, and if you check out the Empty dirt lot next to/across the church, going toward Ross Ave... you'll see Illegals kicking it on couches under the trees.
Then take N.Carroll down the street, toward Bryan street , til you see the Quik-Mart on the left (blue roof, with white BARS on all the windows) and you'll see grown men in front, "doing their thang" ;one is on a bmx bicycle. Further down the street, not even a block down from that, you'll see a bum on the left, pushing a baby carriage, with his homeless belongings...
On the day the Google Camera van came by, everyone must have been somewhere, coz this street in particular,
usually has like 50 more people up and down, just walking or.... hanging out under the trees in empty lots.
Someone got shot 2 apartments down from me, a week and a half ago, over a $6 dollar debt. !
Trust me, I know a ghetto when I see one.
Truth be told, I'd rather live in San Jose or ANYWHERE in the Bay area, than in the Sacramento valley.
The Bay is the Best, when it comes to NorCal.
And San Jose is known for being a Hispanic majority area; not "poor" Hispanics,
but RICH hispanics, with some class.
That's a fact.

Oh great, now I have to defend the Sacramento valley too!
...Those look like total s***holes too!!! Truth is, there are good and bad parts throughout the entire country. It's never smart to generalize about pretty much anything.
