I think the Midwest's feel drastically changes as you move west (obviously). If youre in Ohio or Indiana, it definitely feels more East Coast. But if youre in South Dakota or Missouri, it feels far more western than anything on the East Coast.
I would like to know how Missouri is anything like South Dakota? Missouri is much more like Indiana or Ohio than South Dakota. Hell....I think St. Louis is one of the most eastern feeling cities in the Midwest.

Yes, I think that St. Louis feels like an eastern US city while Kansas City has a very western flavor.
The thing I dislike the most about the West is the aridity and lack of winter moisture. The open skies and landscape are nice, but makes the climatic conditions much more extreme. I much prefer the forested eastern US.
There's a loooot of forests in the Western US. The largest tree in the world is in California.
I will agree that the Southwest is more arid (of course, because of the Sonoran desert and Mojave desert, which take up most of the SW). But when you think West, you think California, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Colorado. With inclusion to the mountains, they also have a lot of forest land, some of which (along the Pacific coast) is very dramatic looking.
Though I can't speak for it personally as I've never actually been to any of the states I listed above, I've seen plenty of pictures of plenty of states, so I have a general idea.
But to the original question, it really depends what part of the Midwest one is talking about. The Midwest is just so different and varied it's hard to actually get a general consensus. I mean, Minnesota itself is so varied, so who knows how many more variations of life and attitude there are throughout the whole Midwest?
Depends. The Midwest, to me, is made up of the Great Plains and the Great Lakes areas. The Great Plains are more Western and the Great Lakes are more Eastern (both geographically and culturally). Of course, the midwest areas are their own distinct areas with their own distinct cultures, also.
The Midwest is the Midwest. Midwestern Cities look more like east coast cities, but most were built up on a culture of Farming and Agriculture and serving the needs of those communities. (St. Louis and Chicago were also built on transportation and Finance)
As an East Coast/West Coast transplant, I can tell you that there is a heavy redneck culture in this neck of the woods that takes a lot of getting used too.
This is what I have to say about the matter I live in Cincinnati Ohio, and out here its mostly east coast. Our cities are just like eastern cities: Columbus like Washington DC, Cincinnati like Downtown Brooklyn, And Dayton like Atlantic City, Clevland Like Williamsburg in Eastern Virginia.
Huh??
How the heck is Cleveland like Williamsburg in Virginia???

Youre lookin at the shallow end of the pool here. You need to look deeper to see why MO feels more western than eastern. Heres just a few reasons why I think MO feels more western than eastern:
The flora is different than what you can find in most eastern states.
The fauna is different. You wont see tarantulas and scorpions in NYC.
The mountains with glades and cacti feel far more western than eastern.
The Midwest has the most in common with the south.
The Midwest is broad. Only a few tiny areas have things in common with the South, which would be places like very southern Illinois, very southern Indiana, etc. Northern IL, WI, MI, MN, ND, SD, etc, feel absolutely nothing like the South. Not even close.
