People act like this kind of backward thinking is commonly found throughout the South - it isn't. This confederate flag announcement (and other stunts like it) is obviously the work of one person or a radical group of individuals. You present it as if it's funded by the city of Tampa and supported by the general public - it isn't.
There are radical social outcasts all over the world, but usually they aren't seen as representative of the people and/or ideology of their city, region, or country. Not so with the crazies from the southern U.S. - some people are naive enough to believe that we're all that way.

The only place in Florida thats not southern is Miami. Tampa and the rest are the deep south for sure.
I usually agree with you here, but Tampa is definitely not the deep south, neither is orlando... I don't even know if I would classify them as southern at all actually, though I'm sure you can bump into lots of rednecks..., it isn't the majority. I'm up in north florida and Tampa is world class compared to here. I'm not a fan of the city, but there is a big difference.
Even here isn't THAT bad ... alabama/mississippi/sc/greater georgia/parts of north fl/north la ...now that is deep south.
A city like Tampa that allows the worlds largest confederate flag to be flown is the "Deep South".
No it isnt, like someone said earlier you cant judge the character of a city, by the actions of a FEW. C'mon you're smarter then that. You seem like a real smart person. Orlando and Tampa??? I didnt know the deep south had alot of puerto ricans and cubans, who would've thought?

I usually find DJ's posts pretty good, but this one is an anomaly. I will give him the benefit of the doubt in what he is trying to get at ... and I think what he means is that Tampa and Orlando are "surrounded" by the deep south, and those same people do come in to the city from time to time...but not really its residents or what the cities are about. It is the same way here but much less of an "oasis", outside of campus and a few suburbs, it is "surrounded" by the deep south. Orlando more of it than Tampa.
You obviously have never been through the Bithlo section of Orlando.
You've obviously never been to the ViMi district.
