A simple visit to Atlanta would prove to anyone that Atlanta is sprawled and undense. Just accept it, you are taking your self made title of "New York of the South" to seriously.

Okay, here's another comparison. This time with the very popular among urban experts Denver Metro Area.

Atlanta
Counties population Square miles
Fulton 915,623 529
Dekalb 677,959 268
Cobb 663,818 340
Gwinnett 726,273 433
Clayton 267,966 143

3,251,639 1,713

Denver
Denver 588,349 153
Arapahoe 545,089 803
Adams 422,495 1192
Jefferson 529,354 772

2,085,287 2,920

Okay Atlanta bashers you now have a new whipping child. You can now begin trashing Denver as being a sprawling, un dense mess. After all it's Metro Area is larger with fewer people than Atlanta's 5 main counties. Anytime now.... I'm waiting...

Now explain to me all you Atlanta is soooo sprawling fanatics and Atlanta is sooo undense screamers. Why are you not complaining about how sprawling Boston is? There are many many other metro areas that Atlanta also compares favorably with provided you don't include all the far off low density counties that aren't necessary for you to live in if you move to Atlanta.

Oh, and actually these figures are a little old. Boston metro has lost people and gotten less dense while those 5 ATL counties have gained a lot of people and gotten even more dense since then.

So those City Data facts I compiled above showing that the Five core counties of Atlanta are just as dense as the Five core counties of your Northeastern brother Boston are just make believe? Atlanta may not look as urban because of all the trees (something many of you Northeasterners are used to seeing only in parks) but fact is metro wise the Core counties of Atlanta actually compete in density to some of your metro areas. I've posted the facts before but many of you seem to be living in a state of denial that can only be described as delusional at the least.

I was talking about density. the size of land does affect density. I'll give credit where credit is due though. Atlanta has a nice size population for a area of 1,713. Houston has 4 million at like 1,778 (1,729 if you throw in the water).

The Denver Metro had a population of 2,506,626 in 2008 and the Denver-Aurora-Boulder Combined metro is 2,998,878.

What's with all the ATL threads in here anyway? I doubt they're being generated by folks from the ATL. I voted for ATL over Philly to balance things out a little bit.

I don't think he is even comparing metro areas, because if so than they are all wrong.

I was comparing all of Metro Denver's counties except Boulder to Atlanta's five core counties to show that they have more people packed into them than the entire Denver Metro area (even if you use the 2.9 mil figure) which covers way way more land.

Denver has about 2.7 million in its metro area.

You're right if you stay in some far flung suburb for a 3 day weekend thinking you've seen it all. When was the last time you were here? How Long?Where did you stay?Did you ride Marta?or did you drive?Just trying to figure out your angle.

His "angle" is to be as negative about our city as he can possibly be. It's pretty clear to anyone following his posts. You can provide empirical evidence until you are blue in the face; it won't remedy anything.
