Those are the best things about Providence. Providence has tons of local theater and live music and good food, it's one of the best cities for a fun night out. The city is a microcosm of culture... but it's still half the size of Pittsburgh and does not have the same institutions that it can call its own (Sports and Arts), because Boston is too close. Both great cities, both at half their peak populations. Providence is growing in population, but their abysmal per-capita income and unemployment rates revel there's not much there for people who make the move.
Not a single person I grew up with there stayed, they all moved to the 'better' cities that are always talked about here. I have childhood friends from Providence who moved to SF, NYC, Philly, Miami, L.A, Toronto, Seattle, Houston etc.
sorry when did 180,000 become half of 230,000?
Also its Per capita income is about average for America.
Pittsburgh 2010 census population = 305,704
Providence 2010 census population = 178,042
Providence is a bit above half of Pittsburgh in population, but not by much.
Providence continues to trail most of the country economically. Incomes are below the national average, and that's very bad if you are living in a city in the northeast.
Unemployment in the Pittsburgh is 8%, Providence is 12.3%
Just a few years ago unemployment rates in the two cities were about the same, now Providence is just terrible.
Pittsburgh 2010 census population = 305,704
Providence 2010 census population = 178,042
A bit above half, but not by much...
no its closer to 1/4 loss
Providence Peaked at 250,000, now it is at 180,000, thats 70,000 people, half of 250,000 is 125,000 which is almost double 70,000. Pittsburgh lost almost 1/2 of its Population Providence lost about 1/4
Nitpicker, do you really care how much each city shrank? We're talking present day.
Point is Providence is smaller, has a terrible economy, and lacks the cultural amenities of Pittsburgh because of proximity to Boston. Most of what's nice in Providence is there because of the wealth brought to town by students.

you inflated the number by 100%, thats like you saying Providence is really dangerous, it had 30 murders last year, when it had 15, by the way Providence is safer than Pittsburgh.
Back in the '90's PVD claimed to be the 'safest city in the continental United States'. In reality it's the ONLY city where I've been attacked by strangers. What a joke. PVD is a mafia town, crime stats are meaningless.
Aren't you covering up for misstating the ACTUAL populations of these cities, circa 2010 U.S. census? That's where this pettiness started, right?
Good bye for now, this argument is a waste of time.

so you inflated numbers by 100% and im the one who has a stupid argument.
I have a friend that was mugged in Philly, but when he went to detroit he wasnt mugged, does that mean Philly is more Dangerous than Detroit?
according to your logic yes
You would have to guess, because you clearly don't know the Pittsburgh of today...It's ok most of America is ignorant about Pittsburgh of today, which is why when most visit for the first time they're floored...
IDGAF, you cant pay me to live in Pittsburgh. First its a Northeastern city so it claims to be but lacks the main asset of other Northeastern cities- being on or near the coast. The winters are awful, its not fun nor glamorous, nor does it feel like a huge metro. Providence on the other hand while small and feels smaller than Pittsburgh because it rightfully is has a coastal location, hills and mountains in the area, only a stone throws away from Martha's or Cape Cod, and is in the same metro as Boston. Providence makes for a great bedroom community to Boston.
Pittsburgh, I don't care how its turned around or anything. I just wouldn't live in that isolated place. PERIOD.
good for you, no really! move to providence and
support their crappy economy.
