As an outsider, I think Houston's biggest image problem is that it's in Texas. Texas as a whole has a horrible reputation on the west coast (and probably the northeast as well) and Houston suffers from the bigger picture. That coupled with the oppressive heat/humidity and perceived lack of natural beauty do not a good image make.
Remember though, Austin is perceived as being the least "Texas-like" of cities in Texas. It's seen as a pocket of liberalism surrounded by Bush-loving, gun-waving conservatives.
Yes because everyone in Texas has a gun and big belt buckle at all times and we all have a picture of George Bush hanging on they're mantle. I know your just stating the stereotype, but I think it's funny that so many people perceive a state of 25 million people to be just like this. It's like saying everyone from California is a surfer or everyone from New Jersey is a Guido.
People may have a negative view of Texas but that isnt stopping hundreds of thousands of people from moving there annually.
Many people on this thread (and in real life) have stated that Texas has a bad reputation on the West Coast, and yet so many people from California are flooding into Houston? What gives? Do they just have no where else to go or are there also a lot of Californians who like Texas?

Part of Texas' image problem is the prevalent attitude of Texans that the world revolves around it.
