Today Santa Monica is in the 80's with sunny skies & cold surf Water temp: 65F. Miami Beach may be cooler today but the water temp has to be at least 70F, right?
^^ ehhy, 68/69 right around there it warms up to maybe 70 during the day then it cools back down, the good thing is after March the water temps only rise, unlike California that stays stuck in the 60s always...

They get into the 70's every summer, low 70's usually though.

The Pacific manages to climb into the low 70's by mid summer but it only lasts a few months. There is hardly any difference between winter [near 60F] and summer [near 70F] unlike Florida where summer ocean temps are in the 80's or higher sometimes. But frankly I don't particularly like hot water temps. In the California desert, hotels have to cool the water down in the pools because it becomes uncomfortably warm otherwise. I prefer 70-80F.
Haha, to be honest, I don't like Santa Monica that much because it reminds me of Berkeley (a place I don't particularly enjoy, since I went to school there) with a nice beach.
In LA, even though I technically live closer to Santa Monica and Venice, I always went out to Zuma Beach (along with a million other people from the San Fernando Valley). It's a MUCH nicer beach, and a lot less crowded.
My brother lived on Miami Beach, and he enjoyed every bit of it. In fact..my roomate is going there right now. Sounds like a really fun place to be. I'm going to hit that up soon!

I guess it's all a matter of taste as Zuma is a GREAT beach for relaxing, enjoying the natural beauty and surfing (though the break there is not the greatest compared to other spots in Malibu).
Take SM's neighbor: Venice Beach which is COOL for other reasons.....like a bohemian culture and a crazy carnival atmosphere. This is a tradition stretching back to at least the Beatnick era of the '50's to the '60's when a young Jim Morrison wrote poetry that would become song lyrics for the Doors, all from the rooftops of Venice Beach.
If you want that in So Fla. you probably have to go to Key West or maybe Coconut Grove.
You may NOT like edgy, cool places (since you don't like Berkeley) but PLENTY of people think that is what makes big cities INTERESTING....a thriving urban culture with creativity and an edge.

Venice Beach has an outdoor gym where famous bodybuilders work out. And there are basketball courts, handball courts, paddle ball courts. You can see a doctor for a marijuana prescription and sign petitions to make America a socialist country. Kind of like Berkeley!

As far as cool, hip, artsy and edgy- 3 words: Rio de Janeiro...then top it off with Carnival. Venice Beach or Berkeley is not even on the same page as Rio.
I know all 3 locales and none compare with Rio. Now living in Rio, that is a whole different animal!
