Both beautiful, awesome cities.

Chicago is too cold in the winter, DC is too hot and humid in the summer.

Chicago has very rough areas with high levels of violent crime (South Side), in DC you pretend that anything outside of the NW quadrant doesn't exist.

Chicago is a true concrete jungle, with pristine skyscrapers as far as the eye can see, rivaled only by Manhattan. DC with its famous building height limit lacks a skyline, but it gives the city a unique, Parisian character unlike any other major US metro.

DC has more free day-time attractions and family-friendly destinations, Chicago has a bigger nightlife scene.

Chicago is generally more affordable, in part because of the lack of DC's height restrictions. For someone in their 20s starting out, they will find more opportunities to live close to the heart of the action in Chicago, thanks to the abundance of high-rise residential buildings. To find comparable rent in DC they would probably have to go over the river to Arlington and beyond (not that NOVA isn't a nice place to live.)

I genuinely can't choose a favorite. Any urbanophiles in the US owe it to themselves to spend plenty of time in each. Whatever your feelings toward DC, if you've never spent a day at the National Mall and stood at the Washington Monument as the sun goes down, get your ass to the District.

Look at this:

chicago - Google Maps

Y'all have random el train tracks in the middle of nowhere and unlike Philly and NYC, ya trains run behind buildings, has grade crossings, and you see random elevated tracks like the link shows above... and its sits so low too. Someone could probably climb up there and disturb service.
I like this, can I have your permission to use it? I mean, since, you're the one who made it up...

People think Chicago is similar to the East Coast but it's not even close. It's decidedly Midwestern, hence the cheap price.

Now you're just being stupid. Philadelphia is decidedly East Coast and is by almost all accounts a cheap city. Your logic (i.e. it's cheap so it must be Midwestern) is flawed.

That's pretty silly. DC's museums and monuments are among the nation's best. Your comment makes about as much sense as someone saying, "Outside of Wall St, nothing really stands out about New York.. you can see a good play & find a nice museum in just about every major city in the US..

LOL at the false notion that DC is some fastpaced urbantopia compared to Chicago of all places-hahaha

That's what you call biting off more than you can chew, especially considering the fact that DC is such a relaxed and genteel Southern city.

I've been to both and loved both! To visit i'd say D.C due to the Museums and history that i'm interested in.... otherwise to live in a grand city that to me feels complete with all the amenities and just feels like a city - i'd go with Chicago easily. I mean walking in the loop and just all around Chicago you feel like you are in 'the city'

18Montclair has been hijacking many threads with his humorless garbage. Just don't take him seriously !

By the same token, some of the comments made by DC'sFinest were also ignorant & annoying.
