But I personally feel hip hop (lil wayne especially) has influenced the dreads epidemic a lot over the past few years. He has a lot of clones running around. Im just fine with my dark ceasar though. But I wouldnt credit any particular east coast city with it. Its definitely a south/mid atlantic thing. (and some west coast/bay area)
Dreads of course have roots in African and West Indian culture..but dreads as a fashion statement started in Florida. The story I heard was that some big time drug dealer in Miami made all of his workers grow dreads and wear white tee-shirts. That way when the jump out boys rolled up and all the corner boys ran off they couldnt figure out who was who. Its hard to find a particular suspect when you have 12 dudes on a corner all with dreads and white tee shirts on. And from there it became cool I guess because all the dope boys had dreads and slowly but surely the trend started inching its way up north.

Anyways, IMHO, Miami and DC are about equal on southern culture.
DC looks more southern than Miami though, architecturally speaking.

Explain. I kind of see where you're going with this. I would say the far far northwest portion of DC has some southern characteristics. But the majority of DC is rowhomes and attached houses. Very different from the South outside the older Southern cities like Savannah or Charleston.

I heard that same story, I can't remember where though.

IMHO, DC architecturally looks more like the traditional southern towns than it does as a Mid Atlantic city.

DC:

DC:

Raleigh:

Mid Atlantic Philadelphia & Baltimore:

^^^ Compared to other Mid Atlantic cities, DC has more of a southern look by it's architecture and formation.
Like compare it to this southern city:
DC:

Southern City:

I really think DC is a true crossroads city, culturally it's more Northeastern, but architecturally it's slightly leaning towards Southern. If that makes any sense to you guys at all? IMHO.

I still say Miami is more southern; parts of Miami remind me of Houston.

Honestly, no. What you showed was just an open area of DC that is not meant to have much built on it. Even the Northeastern cities are built like this. However, if you scrolled the camera that took that picture to the left or right, you will see that it is built way differently than the South.

Yeah dudes in Miami wear thick Bob Marley style dreads, dudes from say Atlanta wear the thin style dreads. Gold teeth actually originated in New York.
