Chicago is less safer than NYC. Chicago's typical murder rate each year is 15-18 per 100,000, while NYC is around 6 per 100,000. Chicago is also a big gang city, which is the main reason why CPD is having a rougher time reducing crime rate to NYC level. There are about 75,000-100,000 gang members in the city alone. Gangs control certain blocks in every major area of Chicago, including on the northside. Some neighbrohoods are more entrenched in the gang culture than others.

Not as much as the south or west sides but the north still sees a decent amount of murders a year.
All it takes is one low income building in a neighborhood to get some gang activity.
Yeah, but a lot of the North Side's "gangs" are just fake tough high schoolers.

An analysis of homicides in certain neighborhoods from a few years ago (it's been very stable here since 2004 as far as homicides - although violent crime is down quite a bit overall) found that:
25% of the city's residents live in neighborhoods that have an overall homicide rate of around 46/100,000.
75% of the city's residents live in neighborhoods that have an overall homicide rate of around 5/100,000.
That says a lot.
I agree as well Dover about how amazing it is what the media can do when they want to push a story to grab viewers.
I remember one day there was an article about the massive "surge" in violence in the city and how everything was falling apart. The same day there was another story how the violent crime rate in the city is down 13% compared to 2009, and that 2009 was down almost 64% from the 1990's.
I just laughed at the irony of the media........not that there isn't a problem here with crime, but really, stop creating paranoid drama to grab "clicks".
It's like Chicago in many ways. There are three major differences:
1) Our crime problem is worse.
2) Our corruption problem is worse (ie: can't trust the cops either or city gov't either)
3) Chicago is a grimier city. Unlike all the stuck up snobs in new york, we're tough Chicagoans who know how to survive after breaking a nail.
I was watching the travel channel a few days ago and a random lady on the street in Chicago made this statement: "Chicago has all the benefits of New York, but you don't have to worry about someone stealing your wallet on the el train." Paraphrased.
So, I guess this question is for those who are familiar with both places. Is the statement true?
Is NY nothing more than an unsafe Chicago?
(to re-phrase the statement with my twisted logic).
the crime rate has gone down overall but like someone said earlier a few of the neighborhoods with former cha tenants either went back to what they were in the 80's and 90's or worse.
Anyway new york is new york and chicago is chicago end of story.
ps. that lady needs a reality check. she's probably a tourist
