There are a number of these coming to eastern NC. I think two in Greenville have already been announced, but you will see them in other places on highway corridors.

Does anyone know what the plan is for it?

As of right now I think the county is going to use it as parking for their offices but they may build other offices on the land at a later date.

I think parking for now but its more of a "good deal" for future use. The problem sometimes with these old buildings is that they aren't maintained properly and therefore have little value because of the costs of renovation. The land itself is the main value and certainly of value to the County as its next door neighbor. This is a 100 year purchase.

Correct, previous stories have mentioned that the county plans to use part of the property to add parking for the courthouse and county offices. The Shrine building is beyond repair after flooding from Florence and will be razed.

I am hoping in the long run they make the waterfront portion of the property an 'extended' version of Union Point so that downtown will have two nice parks for the community at each end of East Front Street.

I always hate when things are listed as "beyond repair". Our town said that about the old school building but then the right developer came in and now it's going to be vibrant mixed juice, condos and retail space. Just depends on if you're willing to spend the money or if you'd rather bulldoze it and build something from scratch that likely won't last near as long.
