As for Greenville, and I have been one of the more negative posters on here, I admit, concerning crime in town...But, the crime tends to be concentrated to West Greenville. And, ECU students tend to become crime victims if they are out downtown, on side streets after 2 in the morning...

As to STI's...Pitt County includes West Greenville...I would not lay the entire blame on the ECU students...

When on campus, it is a beautiful college campus. The majority of students who go to ECU love it and are Pirates for Life! The dorms are locked 24/7 have security cameras on every door, in every public area, etc. The security is good and Pirates watch out for each other.

And, there are parts of Greenville that are gorgeous. They are communities that remind me of where I grew up, too.

Just stay out of West Greenville and don't stay out late on the outskirts of downtown and you will be fine.

It's been documented for a long time and it's a serious public health issue, which despite a number of efforts has yet to be effectively tackled.

Likewise, their undergraduate acceptance rate up through the turn of the century was upwards of 90%. Expansion of the Pell Grant and easing FAFSA restrictions as part of financial reform in the past decade, along with the overall continued transition from a manufacturing to a service-based economy has caused a massive uptick in university applications and accordingly lowered the school's acceptance rate down to about 75% where it currently sits. That's not to say many of their programs, such as music, education, and the medical school (which is a separate entity entirely) aren't very good, which they are. But that considering the OP has concerns about Greenville, some of which are a bit unfounded, it would be wise to dispel those while informing him/her of more immediate. real, and pressing concerns, especially considering the state of the economy and the relative competitiveness of undergraduate schools.

Obviously the decision to invest one's time and money into pursuing post-secondary education is a personal matter, but it would be a disservice to not adequately inform someone who has questions or concerns if you are able to do so.

Also, your stereotypes need updating. Homosexuals go to UNCG, angry, frustrated shut-in engineers and computer science students go to State, and rich kids from New Jersey who didn't have the grades for Duke go to Carolina.
Lets see the proof? I am not going on a wild goose chase. If you're gonna say it, back it up. I know the stereotype, but stereotypes lie.

ECUs admission policy is to accept "more average" students from the east. They believe it is there mission to help those students. That is why we have a higher admission rate. But, students who graduate are equally as prepared as any other university. I don't agree with the admission policy, but that is what happens. I think we need to rely more on the community college system and let some students mature more before going on this adventure.
