I'm currently residing in a small town of Florida, and have lived there my whole life. With the acceptance letter from East Carolina, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to move and attend college there.

One problem. Is it safe?

I've heard great things, and terrible things about the city of Greenville. My family and I definatly saw the terrible parts.

My question is, as an incoming college freshman, will that be the city I'd like to live in? Will I be safe there? Will it be an area for me?

I don't want to live in a city where I am scared for my life, or don't even feel safe to walk around the campus.

Geez, no disrespect, but reading some of these posts make it seem like there is open looting and rioting in the streets here. I still feel that crime in this area is concentrated mostly in certain areas of town. I will say, though, that the recent string of gas station robberies is pretty out of hand. I blame the overall economy for part of that, though.

Despite the economy, this is an area that will continue to grow because of the large institutions (ECU, Hospital) that are continuing to grow.

This thread should be moved to the Eastern NC section of the forum.

By the way, I go running around ECU's campus (during the daytime) and always feel safe doing so.

I did not go to ECU but I've had several family members (including my brother) and friends who did. I've never felt unsafe while visiting and I've never heard them complain about any safety issues. I would take the same precautions as I would anywhere else.

Perhaps it will help if you read through this. They have crime stats.

I lived in G-ville for a year and had no problems with crime. Just watch out if you decide to party downtown on the weekends. Downtown is right next to one of the bad parts of town. Make sure you have friends with you.

Thanks for your answers.
I'm considering ECU to be a top priority for me, but some of the posts on here made me wonder if I was going to feel like I was going to die everytime I walked out my dorm-room.

I'm not gonna lie, I come from a very nice part of town. The only nice part of my town, that is. We're divded by the interstate, the good part and the bad part, once you pass that interstate, you inter the ghetto until you hit the beach. There are parts out there I wouldn't want to drive past at 8 at night, let alone be walking...

First, most Greenville discussions take place in the "Coastal NC" subforum (though granted, Greenville is not "coastal").

Second: while I haven't been to Greenville in awhile, and I understand that PARTS of the city have gotten pretty bad, it's not as if you are moving to the South Bronx. The campus, in particular, should be fine. An increase in crime in recent years in some parts has made "Greenville" and "crime" come up in the same sentence more often than before, but it's still not a bad town in most areas. As a Freshman, most likely you'll be on campus almost all of the time, anyway, surrounded by fellow students.

Just follow gman's advice above and you'll likely be just fine. The kids I know who go to ECU LOVE it, and I do mean, LOVE it

Well, I think it's pretty obvious that you need to visit the campus for yourself to see how you'd like it. That's not something we can do for you (plus it's always highly recommended to do with ANY place you are considering for college. Brochures and websites will only show you what they want to show you. Especially with your nervousness, you need to check it our yourself before deciding one way or the other.

The OP said, "My family and I definatly saw the terrible parts." Sounds to me like they did visit
