The problem with any article about taxes coming out of Charleston should be taken with a grain of salt. I had to stay there for 3 weeks and the taxes on my hotel bill was absolutely ridiculous. My room was $154/ day my taxes were $21 a day.
I had state, local, county, city & occupancy taxes on my bill.

Charleston .... give the level of tourism there.. They generate enough revenue to fund as many auditors, watch dogs, and safeguards they care to spend.. which is a good thing and doesn't excuse Richland County's problems...

South State Corp. announced today it has reached a merger agreement with Augusta-based Southeastern Bank Financial Corp. in a deal valued at $335 million. The combined company will have approximately $10.5 billion in total assets, $8.7 billion in total deposits, $7.2 billion in total loans, a network of 133 branches in the Carolinas and Georgia, and 2,385 employees.
