Columbia won't be that way for another 200-300 years we're just expecting to get 1.5 by 2050 if anything charleston is already like that and will be worse by 2050.
There is nothing proactive about this project this is entirely reactive because where they are expanding is an issue already and they are repaving the where they could should be more proactive. Something DOT does need to do is put a flyover for 20 east to 277 north and i77 south to i20 east.
So they aren't widening I-77 all the way to Blythewood? I skimmed the article a few times but I must have misunderstood it. How crappy if they are just widening a few measly miles where it is truly needed all the way to Blythewood and eventually, a major city in Charlotte?

widening is going all the way to Blythwood and resurfacing for 5 miles north of Blythwood.

If planners stop accommodating suburbia with wider and wider roads and establish a different model, we won't even have to worry about what Columbia's or any other city's suburban traffic quagmires will be like in 200 to 300 years compared to Los Angeles's. It's the principle.
When was an interstate ever one lane in each direction? Interstates were originally designed for faster travel over longer distances, not for ushering traffic out to the suburbs. I don't think you did get it.
The function of roads changes over time with population growth. Expecting I-77 to function the same as it did when it first opened in 2016 is just silly.
