PC MAKER HP has announced that it is dropping Windows 8 in favour of its predecessor, Windows 7.
Advertising on the HP website declares, "Windows 7 is back.... Due to popular demand" The claim is more than just a marketing statement. HP is now preloading most of its PCs with Windows 7 as standard, with Windows 8 having been relegated to an optional customization.
No big shock there. Saw this day coming when I tried Windows 8 before its release to the public. Today is pretty much officially the end of Windows 8. lol
I looked at HP desktops online at a couple of retailers. They are already advertising "windows 7 downgrade rights" with HP's preloaded with Windows 8/8.1.
I might be getting that new desktop I have been wanting to buy for a little over a year after all. lol
Yes. Now I am no longer concerned if I have to replace me wife's business computer with a Windows 8 machine. Options that are no longer an issue: spend $200 buying W7 to install on a new machine or losing a ton of income, because she cannot do her job for three months while she tries to figure out W8. She was one of those who needed rescue from Vista. All of her computer issues ended when I had a tech install XP.

I hope she's moved on from that XP machine by now. It's a bad idea to be on XP nowadays, especially after Microsoft ends support for it in April of this year.
IMO, Windows 8 is OK as long as its Metro interface stays out of the way. It's a feature that adds no value to any computer I've used it on.

While they are pimping it on their main page, there is only one laptop in each line that actually comes with 7 by default, and all the rest come with 8.1.
It's available on more desktops than laptops, but they haven't dumped Win8.

The ones I checked that come with 8.1, also come with a license to upgrade to windows 7. I also looked on a couple of retailer websites that carry HP and they also mention windows 7 licenses on the machines that have 8. One of the retailers I checked was Office Depot.....I didn't go through all of the HP models....just looked at a couple real quick.
Just the simple fact that HP has made this move shows that Microsoft has finally come to terms with 8 being a flop. They had to give HP permission to start pushing 7 again. I am sure they had to amend or redo a contract because they were pushing 8 prior to Christmas. MS dictates which OS's are offered and which is highlighted. The dismal Christmas sales for 8 pretty much put the final nail in the coffin for 8.

The new problem is that they have already let the cat out of the bag that windows 9 will most likely return to the traditional desktop and start menu, perhaps with the option to turn on metro for that .01% of the market who like it. lol So how many will go ahead and buy a 7 machine now and how many will hold out for 9 because MS will most likely put a rush on 9's release. If MS is smart, they will start offering free upgrade rights to 9 on the new machines coming with 7 or 8 so you can upgrade upon its release. I would think this will happen for this years Christmas shopping season.

Let's hope that this is not the approach they take. Two crappy interfaces rather than one good one is the exact problem you have with Windows 8. Allowing you to switch between (enable/disable) one of the two crappy interfaces doesn't fix the problem.

I completely agree. Hopefully metro just dies and goes away and it is the crappy OS/UI that we all talk about in those "remember when" conversations.
