While that may be a suitable workaround for a lot of people, it would result in my desktop resembling a cluttered mess - much like the metro screen I was trying to avoid in the first place.

That is probably the thing I hate the most about 8 and Metro. I despise desktop shortcuts and icons on my home screen. Mine in 7 and XP is just a picture with nothing cluttering it.

That's exactly what my Windows 8.1 desktop looks like. I don't have a single icon. Just the desktop image. I have a couple shortcuts in my taskbar for the programs I use most. When I click the Start button, I have it set to default to 'All Apps', so I can easily access the rest of my programs. So simple and clean, and I never see the Metro screen. Again, it's just taking the time to learn the system.

Anyway, I just bought a new HP at Best Buy and there was no mention of any HP's being pre-loaded with Windows 7.
Windows 8.1 is leaps and bounds better than Windows 8. First, they put the Start button back to users are no longer lost in how to launch applications. Second, they made common functions that were embedded 3 levels deep into charms much easier to access. These were the two biggest complaints about Windows 8.

Only a few select models of HP computers are preloaded with Windows 7.
