We're thinking of accepting a job offer in Connecticut. We are looking for a nice middle to upper-middle class community that is racially/ethnically diverse and has great schools. Are there any towns/cities in CT that fit that bill? Also, is there much of a sense of community among African-Americans in CT? Any insights on race relations there and in general what it's like to live there would be appreciated.

You'll have to provide us with more info if you want us to recommend places. Where will you work? How much can you afford?

And further, why would you want to move here if the state is crawling with "wannabes"?

Default Need to know where work is, and what you can afford

can't give any useful info without knowing where you will work, and how much you can spend on renting or purchasing.

I went to UCONN with alot of kids from the Stamford area that seemed to be very open-minded. Most of the kids were mostly white, and actually most of the ones from Fairfield were conservatives. But it seemed like they didn't have a problem with urban culture. Both of those towns are racially diverse, but great schools is sort of up to ur own opinion. what are u used to? Where are u moving from?

No offense, but sometimes I have trouble with interpreting people who claim post that their black. Black is just a color. Most Connecticut people don't have any problem with a person's skin color, but I think many people have an issue with the cultures associated with certain colors.

Most of the New Haven area is dominated by a strong sense community among African-Americans. Thats probably the strongest in CT. But it's not really middle to upper class. Hamden voted in a black mayor, btw. That's pretty middle class.

Default thanks

I appreciate your thoughts on the subject and your sincere effort to be helpful. I lived in predominately white town in CT as a child and my family was one of only 3 black families in town. I can assure you that real racism exists in CT. We moved South, and although it was culture shock, one thing I loved about the South is the sense of community, cultural identity and purpose among African-Americans. If I have to move back to CT for a job opportunity, I refuse to put my daughter in the same situation I was in as a child. That's why I posted on city-data. I'm hoping to get some insight into the other parts of CT.

We will be renting at first. Currently paying a whopping $1,350.00 per month so anything cheaper than that would be a blessing. My main concern is diversity and a decent school system. Not worried about a long commute to work.

Oh, so much so that you want to move back?? Ask yourself why? Because if I experienced racism some place I sure as heck wouldn't move back there. Don't you think...it is kind of a no brainer...
