Really.

Where did I say all religious people had morals? I said these people, who have a quiet faith, have class and morals. You can not only tell by their spoken words, but by their entire family unit.

It's sad you can't see that, and continue to use the "demoralize the victim" mentality that the defense used.

I have nothing but respect for Dr. Petit. However I think it is offensive to non-religious morally upstanding folks to say that his positive qualities stem from his religion or faith.

Why can't he just be a great person and leave it at that?

I'm not religious. I'm not offended. If you're insulted by someone saying "he's a pastor, so he's got conviction, faith and fortitude", then it sounds like a personal problem. I'm not all for extreme Christianity (in fact, organized religion is cult-ish IMO), but in my life experiences, a pastor definitely has more water in his moral glass than your average atheist.

And re: great person...you were the one who challenged that, claiming it's a moot point when it comes to punishment. Sure it might be moot in the PC world, but in the real world, your average person is more likely to want justice (whatever that may be) for the Petits than if it were Tyrone gunned down on MLK Boulevard. If you don't like it, then Occupy New Haven Superior Court.

Jay, the father is a pastor. I'm *pretty* sure when a pastor is talking about being a family of faith and falling onto that faith, he's not talking about faith in the judicial system.
Dr. Petit explained to reporters how it was that he was able to navigate the trial: “We did our best to keep our faith in God that justice would be served.”

BECAUSE THAT'S WHO HE IS. What part of that is NOT clear?
He [Doctor Petit] made the emotional revelation that the only thing stopping him from committing suicide after the attacks was the hope that he would meet up with his family in the afterlife - and his unwillingness to take the chance of being sent somewhere else after his death instead.

...Dr Petit said that because of religious reasons he thought he might not see his family again if he committed suicide.

...'I believe in God, but I was pretty angry with him for a long time. I've talked to a lot of smart people who have told me it's OK to be angry with God. God can take it'.

Why is it such a hard thing to accept that a family can have faith, and that faith can help and support them transcend a tragedy?
