Okay, so i'm transferring colleges and i'm thinking about moving up to Hartford, CT. I would just like a little insight before I make the decision. I would be transferring to the University of Hartford btw.

I just want to know what I should expect if I decide to move up there? I'm from the rural lower Eastern Shore of Maryland and i've never been anywhere north of Philadelphia (and when I went there I was very young). What should I expect culture wise (way of life), weather, people, etc? I hear gangs up there are bad, is that so? Are there a lot of Hispanic/Spanish speaking people? Will I stick out like a sore thumb with my slow southern accented way of speaking and relaxed way of dressing? (with tooth pick in mouth )

Thanks for your help! I know almost nothing about New England but would really love the new atmosphere.

Will you be staying on campus or getting an apartment off-campus?

On campus most definitely, but I would love to get to know the city if I decided to go there.

Unfriendly people, hot summers, cold winters, expensive living in a nutshell.

The people here are not unfriendly, they are reserved and respect people's privacy. If you approach someone they will be friendly and helpful. The summers have their hot days but they are no where near as hot as southern states. The winters can be cold but not nearly as cold as you will find up north. Connecticut is somewhat expensive but it is less expensive than New York City to the south and Boston to the north.

Hartford is a small city. The metropolitan area has about 1 million people. It is a nice city but some people may find it quiet. UHart is located in West
Hartford which is a beautiful suburban town with a wonderful downtown area. The area is generally very nice. I think you will like it. Jay

Do you drive? I'm assuming you do since you are from a rural area. Hartford was just rated by jalopnik.com (a car website) and the 7th worst city in Amerca to drive in... and I agree. I drive here every day for work and it sucks.

Though at night, Harford has one of the better looking skylines in America, IMHO.

I just moved here a month ago from the West Coast and I think you should not listen to people from here. People in CT hate the fact that they are from CT and they constantly crap all over it for some weird reason.

Besides the self loathing that people feel about their home state, people here are exremely nice and outgoing (at least compared to the West Coast).

Cost of living is a bit high but not crazy.

Driving here is an adventure in itself. You have to always keep your eyes open because drivers just do whatever they want.

I went to a Puerto Rican cafe the other day and live near a Jamacian restaurant which is really cool for me since I am a white, blonde hair, blue eyed guy.

If you live on campus you will be totally fine as far as safety but if you go places make sure you have a ride or cab fare because I would not walk alone at night in the city.

The city is small but very urban, everything is paved and the parks here are not very nice (Elizabeth Park is OK but nothing to brag about).

If you want to live in a small city that is definitly a CITY then I'd say give Hartford a go. People on here talk about West Hartford like it is some kind of great place but I think it is pretty much a garbage dump (crappy chain stores) full of garbage people (snooty wannabe rich losers).

Make friends, and stick together. Watch out for footsteps getting too close too quick.
Some who have a rosy outlook of CT are doing their best to be a diplomat..see the lists.. worst place to live, highest taxes, may trickle down into people attitudes from being stressed out.. its not their fault. CT is in dire straits..its not opinion its fact..and Hartford BTW is a dangerous place. See best and worst cities online, dangerous cities in US, etc...

We do drive for the most part here. It wouldn't be a problem for me because there is no way I would drive to CT and back to see my family though. Most likely a bus. Thanks for the info though

I find that very hard to believe. I checked this website and could not find what this rating that you reference. Do you have a link to it?

Quite frankly I do not find Hartford to be anywhere near as bad other major cities. Jay
