Wow to the school closings/delays everywhere. This is insane. We don't see this often (Every 20yrs maybe?) At least the roads dried out from the rains this morning.

Haven't posted a NWS discussion snippet in a while.. We are going to hear, see, and feel the power of this airmass!

Boston:

ATTENDANT BLUSTERY WEST WINDS /15 TO 20 MPH SUSTAINED WITH GUSTS OF AROUND 30 MPH

Upton:

TEMPS
FALLING INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS MOST OF THE REGION AND POSSIBLY
JUST BELOW ZERO ACROSS NW ZONES. THIS IN COMBINATION WITH W WINDS
25-35 MPH WILL PRODUCE BITTERLY COLD WIND CHILLS OF 15-25 BELOW
NORTH/WEST OF NYC..

SCT INSTABILITY CLOUD COVER EXPECTED ON TUESDAY. TEMPS WILL STRUGGLE
TO RISE INTO THE LOWER TEENS ABOVE ACROSS THE NYC METRO AND COASTAL
SECTIONS ON TUESDAY AND SHOULD REMAIN IN THE SINGLE DIGITS INLAND.
WINDCHILLS WILL ONLY REBOUND TO ABOUT -10 TO -15 BY TUE AFTERNOON.

Staying in the single digits tomorrow? Gees.
ALso... my favorite water effect snow is not Lake Effect, its not even River Effect, Its Ocean effect but get this......

CONDITIONS FAVORABLE FOR A NARROW PLUME OF SOUND EFFECT SNOW OVER
THE FORKS OF LONG ISLAND. GIVEN LARGE EXPECTED SPREAD OF 25-30C
BETWEEN H8 TEMPS AND SOUND WATER TEMPS...LIGHT ACCUMULATING SNOW
COULD OCCUR THERE...POSSIBLY WITH A FEW HEAVIER SNOW BURSTS.
CONFIDENCE TOO LOW AT THIS TIME FOR ANY STATEMENTS ON THIS...BUT
AN INCH OR TWO OF SNOW ACCUM IS POSSIBLE.

Here's a map of predicted totals. My sister's kids already have a school closure tomorrow.

20 degrees colder in Atlanta, GA than Milford, at least for the moment. Schools closed down south.

Haha! I did a few times. Especially seeing some pics like the not common Chicago River freezing. If you guys are curious about what others from around the country are going though and saying, there's a thread on this U.S Arctic blast.

Oh, reminds me.. I'm hearing reports of cracks and pops in the house. If your going sub zero expect to hear the same sounds but not like some are being 20s below zero.

Thanks for the thread, Cam! Winds just picked up dramatically in the Danbury area. Frequent gusts-- or maybe it's just strong sustained winds. Impressive.

@ 7 Wishes-- They don't even have ranges for the snow they are about to get!

Two interesting notes this morning:

1) While surrounding regions (i.e. Hartford area, mid Hudson Valley, NJ, Long Island) did a lot of delays (and even some private/parochial school closures.....they tend to be quicker to do that since they are not subject to state laws about making up the day), surprisingly I could find only 2 Westchester Districts (Eastchester and Mt. Vernon) and 1 Fairfield district (Bridgeport) that did a delay.

2) Central Park is now at 6 degrees, so we have at least a tie for a daily record low, ending what I believe is the longest such streak without one in it's 140+ years of weather record (almost 10 years, last one was the 1 degree temp on January 16, 2004). If it gets one degree colder, it would be the first "break" of a record low there since August 7, 1994

Appreciate this because it's not something we see every year, or 5 yrs for that matter.

Walked onto deck and sounded like thunder. It was cracking from the cold.

7am Wind Chills. 12 Below Danbury. 30 Below in Binghamton. 15 Below in Atlantic City. 30 Below in State College.
