Days like this remind me why I stay in CT even near the coast. Cold and Snowy and not even mid December.

Here's a shot I just took. It's nice to walk around with a snowpack and I forgot how chilly it feels with one on the ground.

Looks like 2-4 inches did happen but of course not the way it would of if the banding was stronger and not widespread.. but nice totals for 1st snow accumulation of season. Makes for nice landscape and puts you into the holiday spirit

3" in terryville...not surprisingly there were just wet roads from Hartford to Farmington-ish 84 (exit for uconn health), then everything changed to white and side streets had a coating. Still some coming down here too.

December 15 Storm Update:

Obviously you can tune to the Weather Channel to get the full view and technical so lets go over the general idea of whats happening.

NOAA/WPC Forecast Maps: WPC Day 5 Sea Level Pressures and Fronts

In English.. Saturday morning(left image) 2 storms. The one on top (the weaker one) will head towards Great Lakes and merge with the bottom one heading up the coast.

The kicker is another stronger storm from Canada heading down and all 3 merging together and then strengthening off the coast.

That's the general idea. The confident details will come in time. More tomorrow.

Want to see something cool?? The players on the map. You don't need to be a weather geek to see where the 2 storms are in the Pacific. That's impressive right there. The spin on the left hand side and the spin off the southern CA coast. They are the ingredients of our storm.

We haven't had a real cold December in a while here in CT. It's nice to flush everything out once in a while in terms of bugs/animals, air pollution and what-not. Speaking of the cold weather, the Upper Midwest/Plains/Rockies have been getting hammered by arctic air for a while now. Are we tapping into our winter arctic air and getting it over with early, or should we expect much colder temps in the coming weeks? If this is our winter air, can we expect an early spring?

December 15, 2013 Storm Update:

No forecast calls for a warm rain. There is nothing supporting that. All models continue with the storm idea and support mostly snow. In fact, I suggest looking at NOAA's update now. They are stronger and more south with the coastal storm.

Here's NWS hourly forecast for BDR (right on the coast) We just don't know the amounts yet. Do those temps support rain? This would be my 4th falling snow this year and 2nd accumulating one for the state. At least it's a weekend right?

And isn't it amazing what a snowpack does to temps this morning? It's like being in a freezer. 24° here. Teens in certain spots. 20s down to the coast and even the VA coast.

Yesterday's storm gave me about 4" in the East Glastonbury/Marlborough hills. It was wetter than I expected, I thought this was going to be the nice fluffy stuff. As I was snow blowing around 6:30 last night it was more like snow pellets coming down instead of flakes. Woke up this morning to 18 degree temps and that winter wonderland-esque snow coating on the trees and power lines...winter is definitely here!

The "national weather service" at Upton. Wow. They are using the word significant. This is getting interesting. Keep plans to a local level for this weekend. Timing and amount we don't know yet.

BASED ON THIS MODEL CHOICE HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR A SIGNIFICANT
WINTER STORM TO IMPACT THE AREA FROM MAINLY SATURDAY AFTERNOON
THROUGH SUNDAY...WITH IT PASSING NEAR THE 40N/70W BENCH MARK DURING THE DAY ON SUNDAY

Actually WCBS 880 news radio was still saying snow to rain for NYC and Long Island and possibly the CT coast, but I think they were basing it on past runs, I've noticed that latest NWS forecasts even for those areas are trending towards all snow or snow to mix now.....

I think this storm has potential for southern New England by late Saturday. Precip type could be ify though, but inland areas could get some heavy snow. Still, as most have said, to early to call numbers.
