Meriden ain't bad. I like it from the few places I've been there. I feel like Waterbury was like Meriden before it slumped.

Wolcott is nice but a bit closed off from major highways, if I recall correctly. But it's nice. Definitely boring; more of a family-oriented town.

Ansonia is tiny and rough.

Derby, too. Smallest town in CT! You could walk it in a day, lol!

Hamden is nice. Probably a top pick from your list. Know plenty of people that live there. Middle class and diverse.

Only familiar with West Haven. And Route 1 at that. Feels like an extension of Milford (Route 1). Wouldn't even be able to tell which town I'm in if there were no signs indicating it, lol!

Naugatuck...I actually don't mind Naugatuck, it's definitely very middle class, but, I've also heard some horror stories. Not sure how I feel about it, tbh. Maybe if it was a quiet neighborhood, I wouldn't mind it. Location is preferable for me since it's on I-84.

How Meriden compare to New Britain

I'd give the edge to Meriden. Schools aren't as bad. Less crime rate, too, I believe.

Why isn't Seymour on your list? From what I understand, it's an affordable town, with the added bonus of being a potential up-and-coming one. Could be a good investment...

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of these towns in red.

  4. Ansonia - anso-who?
  5. Derby - Don't know much about Derby.
  6. Hamden - over priced for what it is. Don't live on the new haven side. Lots of conveniences
  7. New Haven - college town at the core, surrounded by severe ghetto, blight and high crime. couldn't have said it better.
  8. East Haven - seems pretty decent, albeit somewhat gritty-good description
  9. West Haven - don't know much about WH
  10. Naugatuck - taxes are so high your monthly payment would be the same in other towns even if you spent as much as 60-75k more on a house. stay far far away.
Are my impressions shared by anyone else?

Clearly you haven't been on Route 1 in those towns much. Milford and Orange blend together, but it's very, very noticeable when you get into West Haven. Things get dumpy, quick.

The only part of West Haven I would seriously consider is West Shore by the Woodmont border. Very nice area.

On that list, Hamden would be a great choice. The only part of Hamden that is to be avoided is the southern Dixwell area. The other part of Hamden that borders New Haven around Whitney Ave is very nice.

I agree. While Route 1 is an eyesore from Bridgeport to New Haven, West Haven is particularly gritty once you pass the shopping center with Target.

I like the Seymour suggestion. It's a solid middle class town with decent schools. It's a bit on the family oriented side so the OP likely would complain about it (no surprise there). Shelton, away from Howe Ave, I would also highly recommend. Both Seymour have a mixture of upper middle class, middle class and working class.

I also find many parts of Hamden to be attractive, as well.

There are some, but they are either management level, public accounting firms or with companies I already worked at, or companies that my friends who work at told me to avoid like the plague.

FFC has tons of jobs for me. New Haven County has some, surprisingly.
