Also probably the cloudiest January in 90 years! Kind of ruins it.

That would explain the insane lows

=======================

Hartford Data for January 1932.

Imagine being 21° then hitting 70° 3 days later...in January!

The month ended at +10.6 (Record Warmest January)

I like how the snow didn't melt with temps that high. (error)

Guess what...………..

1931 was hottest year on record (prior to 1949)
4 yrs prior 1927 had the coldest summer on record
2 yrs after 1934 had the had the 3rd coldest winter on record (pre 1960)

So many extremes!

How close is Hartford to topping 1932? NYC is going to be real close I think they are tied with 1932 at 43.2 F right now though they'll clearly be #2 at worst since #2 is almost a full 2 degrees colder set in 1950. Warm through Monday but cold Tuesday so it will be interesting.

Side note about 1932 few know. Central Park is going to set a record for "warmest low temp of the month" for any January. So far that is 28, the record is 25 set in 1937. But EVERY day of January 1932 in NYC had a low temp over 30 except for the very last day, the 31st, which had a low of 24. We have an outside shot of NYC being that cold at 11:59pm on Jan 31 (it's going to finally go below normal after that), but current forecast has it being 28 then. Another interesting thing is the Winter Olympics were that year in Lake Placid, NY and even up there there was a snow drought and there were worries about being able to do skiing.

(the 1930s were really a crazy time of super extremes in both directions......especially in January.....as you indirectly said January is actually one of the few months of the year that doesn't really show a true modern warmup pattern, just a lot of "zig zags", sometimes in just a few years of record, in NYC not counting this year only two of the 10 warmest Januaries are after 2000 (and none since 2006 until now), two more are in the 1990s, then the other 6 are before 1950, including 1890 (the only January for NYC to not even have flurries let alone measurable snow) for #10. Three of them (1932, 1933, and 1937) are in the 1930s.

Well that's a different sight...

I usually look at the 850mb temps (5000') because that indicates the airmass which the surface reflects from...

That's something we haven't seen all winter... Single digits and Below 0°F airmass aloft? = BRRRRRRR

Feb 3-4 might feel weird

Look at it swing through then it warms back up.. See it swinging in from Canada?

What the surface would feel like February 4th according to the latest Euro. LOL

Was just gonna post about the Arctic blast (by this winter's standards) coming through next weekend, but you beat me to it. But no storm tracks in sight, right? Another waste of cold air?

Does that say the low in Danbury on Feb 4 will be -9? Wow that would be some change! Though it kind of would be like Christmas Eve where it got really cold then got back warm again.
