2° in Danbury & Bridgeport

-5° at Willimantic

Everyone is watching Mt Washington wind chill because the record is -110°.. they are at -99 below zero right now.

Do you mean the world record is a windchill of -110?

Because I would think the temperature record (-128 in Antarctica) would have that as the wind chill if there was no wind.

I kept hearing the US record (including Alaska!) was broken, I heard that was -103, and it had occurred in the past both in Alaska and Mt. Washington. Lowest I heard for Mt. Washington last night was -109 but maybe it got to that -110 or lower later at night

Heard about that and that's incredible! I wonder when that last happened (especially without snow on the ground.....though technically Danbury got some snow that stuck overnight)

This is interesting in that it is hitting New England (even on the coast) a lot harder than some other nearby areas. Philly through DC "only" got down to the mid teens but pretty much all of New England (even coastal Bridgeport not too far from NYC! More on that later but it was a rare time they were significantly colder than Westchester Airport/White Plains) was subzero with NYC as a "buffer" between New England and the Mid Atlantic in the low single numbers (which was still low enough to set daily records at all but Central Park since this was one of the "higher" daily records for February....but even Central Park came close as their record was 0 set in 1918 and they got down to 4). Even BDR's record for the date was "only" 5 set in 1955 and 1996 and was shattered by 9 degrees!

Anyway, two truly historic readings for a coastal location in southern New England:

- The -4 reading at Bridgeport/BDR tied several others for it's third coldest ever and was it's coldest reading since 1984 (when the all time record of -7 was set....records go to 1948)

- Boston/Logan Airport got to -10! Coldest reading since 1957, first "double digit below zero" reading since then as well (though on Valentine's Day 2016 it got to -9 which at the time was also the coldest since 1957). It also tied several other years for 4th coldest February temperature ever.

Mount Washington update courtesy of Accuweather:

- Low of -47 ties lowest ever, set in 1934

- Windchill shattered records as the lowest windchill recorded was -114! Highest wind gust was 127 mph (far from the record there though, in April, 1934 they had a 231 mph gust, which for decades was the largest non-tornadic wind speed recorded on Earth!). Article says previous US record was -103, set also at Mt. Washington on Jan 16, 2004

Also from that article, Boston, shattered two daily record lows, yesterday (-8 at 1159pm) and of course the -10 today. Very old records (yesterday's was -5 in 1881, today's -2 in 1886).

Doesn't look like Mt. Washington hit -110
I'm surprised, I saw them at -109 around midnight

I thought so, though AccuWeather is claiming -114 per the article I posted. Unless they are thinking of their proprietary "Reel Feel" which doesn't always match the Wind Chill/Heat Index, LOL!

I think the Sunbelt just gained another six figure estimate of future population gains after this weather event. It blew in quickly and supposed to be out of here by tonight, but these temperatures feel unfit for human civilization. Like WOW, just WOW! And I generally like winter and snow.

We just got phone notifications that Mt. Washington broke the wind chill record. Guess I'll wait for the actual report from the observatory! Though at that much below zero we're just splitting hairs - it's COLD!!

Awful weather. Not safe for my infant to be outside. Thankfully I can always escape to my SW FL compound.

I'm not impressed by record wind chills. Who cares, there aren't humans walking around up there on the summit with exposed flesh! Those numbers are great for media hype though.

But Mt. Washington's actual air temp low of -46 F was impressive in its own right.

Thanks for the St Albans report--my mother's family lived around there and I still have one relative up in Richford. They used to talk about how cold it got. Hope it gets warmer for you pretty soon.

Not that bad in central CT at 11am as long as you stay in the sun. Everyone's cars started and the dog didn't want to go back inside. Last night I got flashlights ready and waited for the dreaded wind but nothing happened! Thank goodness.

First world issues: I had dinner at a restaurant in Salem, NH last night. Parked my EV outside...it was -3 F when I left. No problem starting or getting home, but the power usage was an insane 400 Wh/mile. Never seen it that high, that's almost 2x what I get in the summer. EV batteries don't like weather like this!
