I would also suggest Knights of Columbus. It's right up Unquowa Road from the station. I parked there for about 2 years before I got my permit. It's cheaper and closer than the lot on Mill Plain Road.
This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny.
People say "don't expand I-95...don't build the LIS bridge...just use mass transit" and you clearly see the problem...we do not have the infrastructure to handle car traffic and parking that comes with people DRIVING to a train station.

Adding parking is a separate issue. There does seem to be a local need for additional parking for those taking the train. Some good suggestions and let's keep them coming as that is the purpose of the thread.

Sure...the long island sound bridge is really going to help all those commuters coming from the shore line to NYC. What you neglect to notice is that people are suggesting that you use a portion of the billions the bridge would require to improve the mass transit - higher speed trains, more parking and local infrastructure, and improving the longer-haul distances. If there was a spur out to the casinos (which seems to be a big part of your argument, for some reason), particularly a train with a bar car , then I'm sure people would start using that instead of driving to the casinos.

How about more garages? It seems in Bridgeport and Stamford, where there are garages, there aren't massive parking problems. I'm sure the NIMBY's in Fairfield, Westport, etc., would immediately have a conniption, but it's not reasonable to expect people to wait 4 years for a parking permit. I'm also sure the construction process would take too long and cause huge problems in the the interim, but people have to be able to park at the train station to use public transit. Big problem with no big solutions. Taking a cab to the Fairfield station costs me $10 each way, which doubles the cost of my transit and would not be an option if I traveled daily.

I would have to agree - not sure why they aren't putting a garage in the new Fairfield station. It would take up less space, it's already going into an industrial-type area, and would seriously help cut the waiting list, or at least help with more day parking spots. It's very possible that the trains expected to stop there can't support the # of people that a garage would bring, but who knows.

Since this one will be ADA compliant, and allegedly a better station overall, I imagine it will be the new primary express Fairfield stop, with the current Fairfield station relegated to Southport or Greens Farms status. Still some trains will stop there, but not as frequent or as many cars. Either way - I'm looking for a little help with my commute!

I'm not so sure about that. Sure, it is possible based on your reasoning, but it is in an awfully incovenient location for a great deal of Fairfield residents. The current station is much more centrally-located. I think/hope both will remain express stops.

One of the reasons that they are building they are building a new station in Fairfield is because the town did not want to see a massive parking garage in the center of town. It would have really distroyed the small town look of Fairfield Center (not that the current sea of asphalt is anything to write home about).

The original plans for the new station called for the developer to provide 1,500 commuter parking spaces, most of which were going to be in parking garages. When Ken Flatto became First Selectman he did not like that arrangement and felt that the town needed to own the land and build the parking lot, so the deal was renegoiated. In hind sight, Flatto may have been smart to do this since the private part of the project appears to be on hold because of the economy. The nice thing about the new station is that it does afford the town the opportunity to build a garage. It certainly would not look out of place. Jay

I don't feel that "nimbyism" is the issue when it comes to constructing garages in the suburbs. The ridiculously long waits to get a suburban permit are by design, because the current rail infrastructure can not accommodate the amount of passengers that these suburban garages would generate. In other words, "we" are just getting lip service from the state when they tell us to utilize mass transit.

I agree with that. Jay

Are these new trains coming? Will they increase capacity? It's pretty typical America. We want a lot of things, but don't really want to invest money to pay for it. Although, I also find it difficult to believe with the number of riders on a typical Metro-North train that they can't find the money to invest in the future, more trains, etc.
