For the average soldier, those terms of "hate" never factored in, as they in many cases were fighting a defensive battle on their own land.
So seceding from the country, ignoring the Constitution, creating its own currency, electing its own president, keeping slaves, and firing the first shots of the Civil War was a "defensive" act?
I don't think getting rid of the confederate flag will make any difference in racism. There are people who hate based on color or ethnicity, lack empathy, have no tolerance or respect for others and removing a historical flag will not change any of it. The same goes for gun control. These mass murders that are plaguing the US are all committed with legal guns. Making new gun laws like the stupid one in NY will never stop those who plan these heinous crimes.
So is this an end of the abolition of slavery ......Nought ........, or the rejection of civil war traditions are just restitution reconciliation for the black people ...... Like the native people in Western Canada are demanding reconciliation of the demise of their culture

Not so sure about that.
Thanks for at least detailing your point of disagreement, the other hairsplitter guy I must have scared off.
Once again people are confusing the flag of the confederate government with the battle flag.
The average confederate soldier was not a slave owner, was not particularly knowledgable about the consititution, they were not well educated, many could not read or write, most probably had no knowledge of who or why the first shot was fired, many hated the confederate governent in Virginia as well. States rights was a vague concept to them. They only knew one thing - union forces were invading there homeland. Very few battles were fought in the Union north, Gettysburg is one of the few examples.
I am not particularly defending or supporting the display of the confederate battle flag, I am just trying to put it into historical perspective.
Very nice history lesson! But I have just a bit more to add.

There was a problem with that flag. Let me quote an editorial from the Savannah Morning News, April 23, 1863.

Since then the subject has been frequently discussed in [the Confederate] Congress and by the press, but neither have been able to agree upon a substitute for the present flag, to which all object on account of its resemblance to that of the abolition despotism against which we are fighting.
They were fighting against abolition and wanted to make sure everyone who saw their flag knew that. So they changed it.

But why did they love that flag, with its white expanse? Let's ask its designer himself, William Thompson.

As a people, we are fighting to maintain the heaven ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause.
You've got to hand it to the Confederates - unlike their modern-day apologists, they were open and unabashed about exactly that for which they were fighting!
Hold on. Where are all the people who claim that terrorists and their organizations like ISIS and so on who hijack a religion and thus we should not blame all of Islam for their actions on this issue?
No one yet has said the Confederate Flag wasn't hijacked by white supremacists or those doing things such as those in recent news.
Is this now the standard, that when a symbol or otherwise is hijacked by certain people or organizations that we as a people now fall back and say, okay, since some use it as their symbol, we'll banish it or remove of from public view?
If hijacking a symbol or thing is now the way to get something removed or banished, lets start with Islam since so many terrorists have decided to embrace it and use it as theirs. Just who is cutting off heads by the hundreds, burning people alive and otherwise murdering people by the thousands? Why those using Islam of course.
So lets start with the Koran. Then we can go after the Confederate flag. What is the difference, one is a religious thing? Well okay then because we insist on the separation between church and state so go for it.
Noone is stopping you from selling, buying, or flying the confederate flag or swastika flag or the KKK cross on your front lawn. Go for it.
