I would leave in an instant for The Netherlands if it wasn't for the wife not wanting to leave. We have friends over there that could sponsor us.

Excluding Canada and Mexico, when I expatriated it was my first time out of the country. Especially if you're young, it's a pretty good way of doing it. You have less responsibilities than someone who is older but typically not much money. I really couldn't have afforded Europe or Asia if I wasn't going there for gainful employment. Now it'd be a lot simpler to just go take a vacation and then come back to my work here, but you get a very different experience as someone living and working in a country than you do as a tourist. Now it would be much more simple to just take a vacation but I'd still consider expatriating again.

I'm aware of the difference between vacationing and expatriating. I would wager a lot of expats had traveled outside of the US prior to becoming an expat.

Me too. I would love to live in Amsterdam and have a friend that lives there.

Sorry, I misread and edited my post =D I'm in a fairly ornery mood from the general direction of this thread which didn't deserve to be directed at you.

Netherlands: cold, rainy, due to be inundated as sea levels rise, and the Dutch tend to be stand-offish, as many Germanic peoples tend to be. But, suit yourself.

I would move to Australia, the UK or Canada if I left the USA but its not happening but I could see myself enjoying living in those countries, maybe in another life.

I love the Conservatives that think this is such an amazing and great Nation, and the rest of the world sucks...."Murica is awesome cause we have freedoms!" Yea....you mean companies have freedoms. Ever been laid off? Wife ever lost her job for being pregnant? wink wink "downsizing." Ever lost a job to some H1B visa "immigrant?" Have issues with the government spending so much on healthcare and food for the sick and dying but ok with spending billions on the worlds "greatest" military? Buried in student loans that taxpayers shouldnt pay for but youre ok with taxes funding benefits to poverty stricken Walmart employees so that Walmart can continue to rake in the profits? Oh wait youre not ok with that but your ok with part of that...Im confused.....Murica.

My wife and I have already discussed a potential move to St-Martin/Anguilla when we retire (far down the road, but still something one needs to think about.) Her family is from there, and it is simply a very nice and safe place to be, especially when compared to the rest of the world what with terrorist threats, wars, etc. Including here.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think we'll have reached bottom until our workers have the same wages & benefits as workers in SE Asia and Africa.
