I can see it from both sides, having a child is not a right and some businesses may be burdened (current maternity leave only affects businesses with greater than 50 employees). On the other hand, having a child is something that is natural and can happen at any time.

Most people are aware that Americans have a raw deal when it comes to maternity leave. Perhaps they’ve heard about Sweden, with its drool-inducing 16 months of paid parental leave, or Finland, where, after about 9 months of paid leave, the mother or father can take—or split—additional paid “child care leave” until the child’s third birthday.

But most Americans don’t realize quite how out of step we are. It’s not just wealthy, social democratic Nordic countries that make us look bad. With the exception of a few small countries like Papua New Guinea and Suriname, every other nation in the world—rich or poor—now requires paid maternity leave.

Your boss did not decide to have a child, you did. I agree there ought to be paid leave based on medical necessity associated with pregnancy/childbirth but if you want to stay home with the child that should be on your dime.

If I were a business and required to pay months upon months of child raising leave I would make every attempt to only hire people old enough to be done having babies.

Condoms are cheap. No one needs to pay for your kid.

Say you want paid leave...here's what you do:

Don't take a job that doesn't offer it.

Problem solved.

It's not just businesses that have to pay the costs, we all do. Don't kid yourselves, those costs for maternity leave are passed on in the form of higher prices for goods & services. Companies have no choice, they have to stay profitable. I agree with the others, employers ( and by extension consumers) shouldn't be responsible for employees reproductive practices... which they have no control over. I might agree with a few weeks following birth, but beyond that no.

Look at the denial in this thread. This is why we'll never have the things they do. We're too worried about that CEO getting his 400x higher wage than the average person. No vision, no care for the very foundation of our society. This is why career women don't have kids but the jobless white trash have many.

I agree that most CEO's are grossly over-paid, and that's the fault of their board of directors. Those top-rung salaries aren't going to be affected by whether or not the company pays maternity leave. If a company decides it wants to provide maternity leave for it's employees, then fine... all well and good. But it's wrong to force someone (a company) to take on the financial obligation to support someone else's choices. In effect it's saying "I'm going to have a baby, and there's nothing you can do about it..... and you have to pay me anyway". I just don't agree with making it mandatory.

And what paid-time-off perk do businesses offer to child-free people?

The costs of maternity compensation reduce the funds available to other employees or is coming out of taxpayer pockets and reducing their take home. No thanks.

Side note. Having a child is a right, you are pretty wrong there OP. Having someone else pay for your child? Not so much.

There is no war on families. Does every thread have to start with some title making something out of nothing? A war? Really?
