Europeans spend reasonable money unlike the US.

This is like the joke about the broken pencil.

What happens after 9 months?
Does the kid suddenly not need you anymore?

How come the US being "screwed" is defined by what other countries get in paid leave?

You're either screwed or not screwed. Not "screwed bc some other person decided to do it differently."

Have a kid? Stay home and raise it.

ooh I thought I had been transported back to the 1940's then. Therein lies the issue the antiquated attitude here by most about maternity leave and about women in general! (stay at home and raise them! yes because the father didn't make the choice to have the child too!) The same applies with annual leave here. In the US they have one of the lowest amount of vacation time , plus the fact that even when you gain leave a lot of americans don't actually take time off .

I can remember the "good ole days" when a single worker could support a wife and family... and wives had full-time maternity leave.

Welcome to the Glorious Socialist Paradise, where all workers must do their share to support the State.

They can't abuse it because they don't have a job in the first place. Make employee costs too high and business simply doesn't hire and may even close down.

It's simple economics, yet so many seem to have a very difficult time comprehending this.

It's not just Europe or other developed countries.

Basically almost EVERY OTHER COUNTRY ON EARTH provides some sort of paid parental leave. The US is at the bottom of the list alongside Papua New Guinea. Even Iran and dang near very country in Africa some sort of paid parental leave. According to this site, out of 185 countries, only the US and two other countries don't offer some sort of paid leave (and I think right now, it's just the US and PNG). Countries poorer than the US do more to look out for new parents financially.

There are women going back to week 2 weeks after giving birth, some still dealing w/ complication from that birth.

There are women who save up sick days, skip paid vacations, but then end up having a rough pregnancy have to call out sick, depleting their stored days.

There are people having sick, premature babies who literally can not afford to spend time caring for them lest they lose a paycheck or, worse, a job.

There are people who end up having to apply for TANF, food stamps, and other government aid to cover their unpaid leave (and, as the article points out, they don't always get them).

I don't know about you, but I find this shameful (the US, one of the few, unique places where you can go into life-crippling debt getting an education, getting an illness, or getting pregnant).

One way or another, everyone ends up paying for this. We'll either end up with more people relying on public aid, paying for more adults to receive treatment for the physical/emotional/mental repercussions of returning to work so early, possible higher taxes when there are fewer people around paying them, and a population where middle class/upper middle class couples can't afford to have children and the only ones having them are comprised of people who really shouldn't be having them. We need more educated, experienced, employed people having children vs. people who can only afford to have them b/c they are living government subsidized lives. This country can NOT survive and thrive if people forgo having children b/c they can't afford to do so. We sadly seem to be the only developed country on Earth (well, us and Papua New Guinea) that doesn't seem to understand this...

The US is still the only developed country that doesn

^Goodness. Move to Congo, Chad, Mexico & Bangladesh and see how women are treated there vs the USA. Compare the life styles. Or maybe China is more to your liking where women, for the most part, are only allowed by the state to have one baby.

The nonsense being put forth here is beyond reasoning.

I always love how the only response many here can give is "if you don't like it, then move". No real discussion, just this single line ultimatum as if that was the only option.
