Poor people shop at the above-mentioned Freshfield Farms all the time. It's one of my favorite stores here.
Perhaps you could explain what you mean, then. Be explicit.

*sigh...* Really?

Okay... Drug addicts, people smoking outside by the entrance, hoodlums, purse-snatchers/thieves, rude loudmouths, unkempt dirty people, drunks.
I'm well-aware that these types can be encountered anywhere, but there is no denying that they are by far of higher proportion in stores like Wal-Mart and Dollar Stores. Has nothing to do with poverty; Just a certain class (or lack thereof) of people. The frequency at which law enforcement gets called to Wal-Mart locations is quite telling.

And I know it's not ALL Wal-Marts. The ones here very much fit that bill, though.

Where do you live? I ask because we have quite a few Super Wal-marts, regular Walmarts, and WM Neighborhood stores and have never seen the type of people you listed. If I saw those individuals around any of the stores I shop at I'd seriously consider relocating to a safer area.

It must be the pits to have a delapidated Walmart (and the degenerates it must attract) in one's neighborhood. Yikes.

I live near Orlando. ONE location seems to be better, but it's off in the boonies.

And no, I don't live in the pits. The Wal-Marts here seem to typically be in sketchy neighborhoods, and as such, will generally attract sketchy folks. There's a Wal-Mart in my town, but it's not in my neighborhood. I wouldn't live there.

WalMart Super centers are built in commercial zones. Not in a "neighborhood" but may be within walking distance of people who are so poor that they live near a WalMart.

There is a notorious WalMart in East Stroudsburg, PA about 5 miles from where I live. The building is 199,000 square feet and was completed in 1995. Before that, a factory that made items for the military was on the property, but they went out of business and closed. The old factory was knocked down, local roads were improved, and the WalMart and adjacent buildings were built.

Other WalMarts in places like Milford, PA and Hackettstown, NJ are not considered "notorious" due to demographics.

So if you're scratching your head wondering why others don't love WalMart, or why others don't hate WalMart, compare the demographics of where your WalMart is vs. where theirs is.

As for the original story about the Mom & Pop store closing, they may as well reopen now that WalMart has pulled out of the market.

.........]

Let me rephrase that, then. It must be the pits to have such a Walmart in one's area.

We buy our groceries at the local Weis Supermarket (NYSE: WMK) because we earn "gas points" (legal in our state) for every $50 we spend.

WalMart has good prices but off-brands and a sketchy demographic, at least in our area.

I buy Bulls Eye BBQ sauce at WalMart for $1.50 a bottle vs. $2.29 at Weis and it adds up because my son uses it like water.

Also, I bought WalMart (NYSE: WMT) at $59.25 on 11/30/15 and they're hovering in the $64.00 range right now (with a dividend that has risen every year). I mention this because the Bloomberg article talks about how they've lost 30% of share value in the past year.

In New England, Walmart's Sam's Club was getting crushed by BJ's Wholesale and Costco so those closings are totally understandable. "Walmart Express" and "Neighborhood Market" were failed experiments. That's no big deal.

Most of the closing Supercenters look like there are others not too far away. Juneau, AK is the only exception. It's a head-scratcher how Juneau ever ended up with a Walmart Supercenter. It's only 31,000 people.
