Hold on a minute! "The gun jammed", according to the report. The only way anyone would know that is if the thief pulled the trigger. He tried to murder the driver. Then he jumps out of the car, still with his loaded gun... and calmly starts walking down the street like nothing happened. Had the driver not run this freak down, who knows who he might have killed?
The punk lost an arm. I say "tough going". That's what you get when your thieving butt tries to kill people over a pair of sneakers. What a waste of oxygen and space. I won't lose one tear over him. He should be locked in a cage until he's too old to pull a trigger.

Another point of view is that the driver wanted to chase the criminal and retrieve the shoes, but the criminal was preventing that by holding the gun. Don't feel sorry for this thief at all. He wasn't an innocent bystander by any means; he lost his arm due to his thieving, dishonest actions.
That being said, the would-be victim here shouldn't have been stupid enough to meet this kid in his car?! to conduct this Craigslist business. Everyone knows that there's a lot of shady things going on re: Craigslist. He should have met the kid in a public place, where a lot of other people were around.

Such as where? Are those other people going to somehow prevent the gun crime? The general public has a long history of not getting involved, even when there are dozens of witnesses. You can't count on the gun criminal to have enough common sense to care about witnesses. Criminals like that tend to be under the influence of stuff that makes them commit depraved crimes with no concern about witnesses or consequences. Didn't they meet in a public parking lot, under the watchful eye of a security camera? How much safer can you get than that?
The best way to prevent such crimes is to keep such criminals off the streets. I bet he had a history of violent crime. It should be easy enough for us to simply start taking crime seriously, and dump all the stupid judges who let gun criminals out of prison, or give them short sentences so they can commit more gun crimes sooner. But no, we can't do it that way, because we're too stupid and lazy, and we don't really care.
