I would not participate in this idea and I typically eat alone. I think it is up to one's own self to determine their boundaries when using their or their family's smartphones. I use mine whenever I go out to eat alone cause I don't want strangers bothering me.

Also I hate smartphone shaming.

Any emotional harm that may or may not be occurring in MY FAMILY is none of your concern.

And the problem with loud conversations in restaurants is a problem with the volume, not whether or not there's a phone involved.

exactly.

Smartphone shaming is just another excuse to pass judgement on others and feel superior.

Do you have a problem with strangers bothering you when you are at restaurants?

Oh, the problems with this one.. "Simple".. uh-huh..

https://www.fcc.gov/general/jammer-enforcement

Fines from the FTC.. Should you be operating the jammer and someone can't get through to 911 because of it, you'd be liable.

While the thought process behind it, I totally understand.. Actual use of one ranks way up on the stupidest things that could be done.

Cute idea.

It attracts customers (free ice cream!) in a way that contributes to its brand as a family-oriented place.

I'm an agnostic and won't eat there anyway due to the owners' homophobic stances, but there's nothing wrong with this particular idea.

Hahaha did someone really say "phone shaming"? Now I think I can say I've heard/seen that word used with everything - fat, skinny, short, age and now phone. You can't make this stuff up.

Hell yeah! People used to come to my table since I was eating alone and try to start some of the stupidest conversations. I just wanted a meal, not to meet random people. The smartphone is one hell of a deterrent to that.

And sadly, that's not even a deterrent sometimes!
