Honestly, I believe there is nothing those teenager could have done to save that drowning man. You literally die within minutes. The fact that they laughed and joked about it speaks volumes about their character, or lack of it. They should have called 911. He would have died anyway, but to be that cold and callous is chilling.

I'm really trying to put myself in the shoes of those boys. I know my reaction, I would be freaking out, calling 911...I wouldn't go in the water because...well alligators and I am not a strong enough swimmer to do an adult rescue.

So adding they were high...I would be doubly freaking out because pot makes me paranoid. I could see maybe calling and then running from the scene for a high teenager. Or running then calling 911. Or telling someone who could give an anonymous tip. The family was searching the area for this man the whole time. It stands to reason they heard about it.

I don't know. I like to try and understand motivation for behavior and decisions like this. They are still only kids. I am just having a hard time with this one.

Every time something horrific happens, you tend to think that we've reached the deepest depth of hell.

Then another story usually pops up that lets us know hell goes deeper!

This story is just a damned, headshaking, shame...

This reminds me a lot of the Kitty Genovese killing in 1964 in New York City. See Teens Film & Laugh at Drowning Man; Shades of Kitty Genovese.

Has noone heard of a human chain? The guy wasn't THAT far out. Someone dropped the ball in teaching these kids how to dial 911 if they are not going to help someone themselves. I see a lot of people making excuses for these kids. That is another reason terrible things like this happen. People are willing to excuse behaviors that are bad. Those teens are old enough to think outside of their own needs and wants; only toddlers and very small children do that because they have to learn it. There is no excuse for a teen to do that. Being high isn't an excuse either. They weren't too stoned to know the guy was drowning and to pull out a cell phone to record it.

There was no way to save the drowning man. Water like that in Florida can be full of alligators - a horror. The man was in the middle of a small lake in deep water.

There were not enough people around to form a human chain. (only 5 boys) And a human chain would not be recommended because of alligators.

Plus the water appeared to be way too deep for a human chain. A human chain does not work in deep water like that - which is not similar to the recent rescue of people caught in ocean riptides using a human chain, and even that chain required tons of people.

Many people have seen the alligator grab & kill the little boy from a small lake at a Disney resort while wading right off what was billed as a beach.

This was not a regular lake with boats, swimming, recreation, and people around. It is a water retention 'pond' for overflow water, not for recreation.

It's the laughing and joking which is shocking behavior.

We live in an era when laws and law enforcement are held in contempt.

The attitudes and behavior seen on this tape represents a larger portion of vocal America now.

I just went back and listened to the tape's audio portion again. Not really all that surprised.
