They say your odds of being hit by lightning are much greater than winning the PowerBall.

True, but I never personally knew anyone who got struck by lightning but personally know many members of a group who won the lottery.

There also say it is more likely you have a greater likelihood of becoming president of the united States.

I think it is funny that when the jackpot is 100 million, comparatively fewer people buy tickets. what $100 million is not enough to be worth spending a dollar?

Actually you get about 25% of the published amount (slightly more, but 25% is a good rough figure). So 100 million = $25 - $30 million. I still contend that i s plenty. Why is it so important to collect $150 million of a 500 Million jackpot instead? How is it that $25 million is simply not enough for one person?

Powerball: How Much You'll Pay in Taxes if You Win | Money

Actually you get more like 42 to 57% … depending on the state and lump sum vs annuity.

I have a site on my favorites that states what amount you will receive in every state participating after state and federal taxes are withheld.

It gives that amount for both cash option and annuity.

Maybe I'll be as lucky as my dad and win a quarter of a million.

Seriously, I'd be thrilled to win either of those figures.

The odds are definitely against you, but people DO win, I think most people know someone that has won or someone in their city at least.

Plus, we really only hear about the BIG lotto winners, the media rarely does stories on people that win $10-20 million, its only when it gets up to $250+ that media takes notice, so there are probably more 'lower end' winners out there than we think.

Well, the Megamillions was won last night. Jackpot is back down to $40 million, $23 million cash value. I'd take that, very happily.
