I think it's pointless. The probability of winning doesn't go up when the jackpot goes up. In fact it gets worse because as the jackpot gets bigger, more people buy tickets, which then causes the probability of you winning, and no one else winning, to decrease. If just one other person wins, your prize is cut in half!
The minimum jackpot is "only" $40 million. While that's obviously less than $535 million, $40 million is still a life-changing amount.
State lotteries make lots of money because of the convenience. Almost every convenience store and grocery store is a "casino". If you go to a real casino, the probability of winning is far higher. You only lose 5 to 15% of your bet to the house. With the state lottery, you lose 50%! Very very bad deal!

The odds of winning the jackpot are still the same (1 in 292 million), regardless of the jackpot amount and how many people play. But the odds of the jackpot being won would be greater if more people buy tickets.
