I can see the self anointed food and cultural experts gritting their teeth, but I love Taco Bell and eat there more than at any other Mexican themed restaurant, 'real' or not.

Taco Bell is America’s favorite “Mexican restaurant,” according to a new survey.

The fast food chain beat out Chipotle (CMG) and Moe’s Southwest Grill to win “Brand of the Year” for the first time since Harris launched its EquiTrend Study 30 years ago.

It's not a matter of self-appointment - it's just having a clue.

As an aside, I was in Los Angeles recently. I did a lot of eating, as it's a great town for authentic Mexican as well as a vast array of other cuisines (had some great Korean and Cuban, too). But it amazed me that there were Taco Bells there. Who on earth would pass up all the great Mexican street food for some moronic 'taco' made out of a giant Dorito? Probably the same sort of person who travels to Europe and eats at a McDonald's in Rome and goes shopping at The Gap in Paris.

I wouldn't say its America's favorite, just the modt popular national chain that isnt going through any publicity problems right now. .

Most Americans are going to have a local restaurant as their favorite. But when doing a national poll, a place like Chavez in Soulard, MO is not going to get many votes.

Taco Bell is going to be everywhere. There are not any Dell Tacos or Baja Fresh in my metro area. There is also only one Moes. So with this poll, that leaves the majority to vote for Qudoba, Chipotle, or Taco Bell. And again, Taco Bell is going to be the one with the most locstions, and they're not getting any bad publicity at the moment.

Whatever floats your boat! Personally, I have a few Mom & Pop taquerias near me that are produce such genuinely good food at such reasonable prices that I'd bypass Taco Bell even if I had a lifetime free pass to lunch at the small Mom & Pop places.

My girlfriend likes Taco Bell. I don't know if I had eaten there before dating her. I picked up some Doritos Locos Tacos a few days ago and they were good. I put the following in the online order and we'll see how it is.

Power Menu Burrito
Removed
Avocado Ranch Sauce
Guacamole
Reduced Fat Sour Cream
Modified
Pico De Gallo (extra)
Added
Fire Roasted Salsa
Jalapeño Peppers
Onions
Tomatoes

To be America's favorite, a restaurant would have to be nation wide. That right there eliminates all the good Mexican restarants. I've never been to a really great Mexican restaurant that had more than two locations, and it is more common to only have the one original restaurant.

I like taco bell ok. It's not really Mexican food, but as far as fast food goes, it beats out a lot of places.

Well, I have had a McDonalds in Paris. Never been to Rome, though. Not everyone can be as urbane, suavecito, etc, as you think yourself to be.

I'm not defending Taco Bell, btw. It is what it is.

I would say that the majority of Americans would have to pass three to five Taco Bells to reach even a sub-standard local Mexican restaurant, itself of dubious authenticity.

So no wonder.

I can't stand Taco Bell. Their refried beans are tasteless and bland. Adding hot sauce doesn't help.
